Assens between town history and the Little Belt
Accommodation in Assens
Assens combines historic streets and museums with maritime impressions along the Little Belt. If youâre looking for a hotel for a stay in Assens, you can plan your trip around the things that interest you locally: town history, museum exhibits, the harbour or the coast.
Historic town and harbour
In 1524, King Frederik I granted Assens its town charter. As a well-preserved market town, Assens features historic buildings and narrow, cobbled streets. From Assens market town, there are views of the Little Belt. Here, you can experience both the townâs built history and views of the water.
At the harbour stands the red Pakhus on Assens Mole, dating from 1884. The TrĂŠskibskaj is intended mainly for traditional wooden sailing ships and larger excursion boats that cannot enter Assens Marina. The marina is a modern yachting harbour with 600 berths; visiting boats can moor at any berth with a green rotating sign. If youâre planning to arrive by boat, check the latest information about harbour operations in advance.
Museums and different perspectives
The ERNST Museum showcases the world of antiques, porcelain and art assembled by silverware manufacturer Frederik Ernst. The museum includes a 250-square-metre apartment with many thousands of objects selected by Frederik Ernst. Frederik Ernstâs Have is the museumâs Italian-inspired courtyard garden. The collection and garden offer contrasting highlights: an abundance of objects on one hand and a landscaped courtyard on the other.
If youâd like to get to know Assens on a guided tour, Museum Vestfyn offers town walks led by experts with extensive knowledge of the townâs history. Availability of this bookable activity may change; check before making plans.
Assens Miniby shifts the focus to architecture at a scale of 1:10: it features more than 130 meticulously handcrafted houses. The first project was an exact copy of the small cookhouse on the harbour mole, built from the original drawings. The Miniby therefore also shows, through a specific example, how a harbour building was recreated as a scale model.
The WILLEMOES Museum is located in Willemoesgaarden, the birthplace of the naval hero Willemoes. The red half-timbered building dates from the 17th century. The museum also offers a maritime play world for children and adultsâa different perspective on the history of the house from the architecture itself.
Landscape and beaches along the Little Belt
Jordbassinerne is a man-made natural area created from soil excavated by the Assens Sugar Factory. The factory operated from 1884 to 2006. The areaâs origins link the landscape with Assensâ industrial history, making it a different historical point of interest from the town charter granted in 1524 or the older buildings.
Assens NĂŠs Beach is located on Assens NĂŠs, west of Assens By on the Little Belt, and is about 650 metres long. The beach is designated as a bathing spot; this classification may be updated by the relevant authority. An accessible bathing jetty can be reached from the car park via a paved path.
There is also specific guidance for walks: the section of the KĂŠrum Ă Trail from Assens to the bridge over the KĂŠrum Ă is suitable for prams and wheelchairs. For planning purposes, these are two different points of reference: at the beach, the paved access to the bathing jetty; on the trail, the suitability of a specifically named section.
