Helnæs By is a loosely laid-out, winding street village: farms and houses are arranged along the course of the road. The village is thought to date from the transitional period between the Viking Age and the Middle Ages. It is believed that Helnæs By was laid out around 1100 and thereafter. On Helnæs, marked trails, natural areas and cultural attractions are also among the topics to consider when planning a trip.

Helnæs By: Street Village and Church History

The street village’s layout is evident in the way the farms and houses follow the course of the road. Helnæs Church is a distinct historical landmark: it was consecrated in 1618 and expanded in 1694. The church stands on a hill overlooking Helnæs Made. The village layout and the church therefore offer different ways to explore the history of the place and its surroundings.

Hiking Trails and Nature on Helnæs

Bobakkerne and Helnæs Made are good options for comparing marked hiking routes. At Bobakkerne, a route of about 2 kilometres starts at the car park. In the heart of Helnæs Made, another marked hiking route leads through the natural area, also starting at a car park; this walk is about 3 kilometres long. The distances provide a practical guide for planning, without implying a specific walking time.

Lapwings, oystercatchers, redshanks and snipes breed at Helnæs Made. The protected orchid known as the early purple orchid also grows there. There is also a named option on the marsh for people with limited mobility: the flat terrain makes it possible to use the gravel path “Overdrevet” and the coastal meadow. The dry toilet at the car park in Bobakkerne is accessible to wheelchair users.

Other natural landmarks each have their own features. Galgebakken is 29 metres high; its summit has a viewpoint offering expansive views. Halen is a long, now completely unspoilt ridge at the northern tip of Helnæs, formed during the Ice Age. Thanks to grazing that has continued for as long as people can remember and the absence of artificial fertilisers, Bobakkerne and Halen are home to species-rich dry grassland flora.

Helnæs Lighthouse and Coastal Paths

Lindehovedvej branches off from Helnæs By and leads to Lindehoved, where Helnæs Lighthouse is located. At the end of the road, there is a car park and a public toilet by the lighthouse. A path leads down from the car park to the stony coast. A path along the cliff edge follows the coast north to the beach at Helnæs Made.

Helnæs Mill also has a connection to nature and leisure: the mill has now been converted into a nature and leisure centre. Kitesurfing is also possible on Helnæs; check the local conditions in advance.
