Rab Between City Walls and Church Towers
Accommodation in Rab
Rab’s historic town center sits on a narrow peninsula, bordered by old city walls and defined by four church towers. This gives the town a clearly recognizable historic focal point. For your trip planning, architectural history and sacred architecture are therefore as much in view as the park, beach and a longer route.
Old Town and Architectural History
Construction of Rab’s defensive walls began in the 12th or 13th century. Kula smjelih was built in the 15th century to strengthen the fortress. The City Lodge was built in 1509 in the Renaissance style as an open, covered hall with a row of columns. The most significant parts of the Knežev dvor palace date from the 15th and 16th centuries. These buildings reveal a span of time from the construction of the walls to Renaissance buildings and later parts of the palace.
The Gradski Lapidarij Rab displays 162 stone monuments, dating from the 2nd or 3rd century to the end of the 18th century. The museum also presents changes in Rab’s architectural styles in chronological order. This lets you explore developments across a longer period, rather than simply viewing individual buildings side by side. The Chapel of St. Christopher was converted into a lapidarium and museum.
Churches, Monastery and Collections
The Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary includes a three-aisled Romanesque basilica from the 12th century, which Pope Alexander III consecrated in 1177. The Benedictine Monastery of St. Andrew, which has existed since the early 11th century, includes a three-aisled church. It was renovated in the 18th century; Romanesque elements were preserved beneath the Baroque decoration. The bell tower of St. Andrew is the oldest on Rab.
The complex of St. John the Evangelist is considered Rab’s only medieval religious complex with an ambulatory around the altar. The Church of St. Justina houses a museum of sacred objects. These different sites complement the architectural history with religious art and architecture; their features range from Romanesque elements to later alterations.
Traditions and Events
The Church of the Holy Cross was built in the 13th century and renovated later. The Rab Musical Evenings are held there in summer. As the cultural program is seasonal, check the dates before your trip. Rabska Fjera may also influence your choice of travel dates: it is considered a three-day festival held from July 25 to 27. During the Fjera, Rab becomes a stage where residents showcase traditional, artistic and craft practices; a knights’ tournament brings the festival to a close. Check the festival dates before your trip.
Performances by Rab’s crossbowmen take place regularly on May 9, June 25, July 27 and August 15. Confirm these dates as you plan. Rapski Križi is a votive custom on Rab that has been practiced in its present form since the 15th century. Alongside the buildings, cultural and religious traditions are therefore also at the heart of a stay here.
Park, Trails and Beach
Komrčar Park lies inland from Rab’s old town. Paths wind around wooded hills and down to Rab’s beaches. The Rab–Maman trail starts at the city walls and runs via St. Euphemia Bay, Kampor and Dumići Bay to the islet of Maman. The route is 14 kilometers long. If you plan to take it, check local route conditions and seasonal services.
Banova Vila is a small beach beside the café of the same name. The beach has a water polo court and a ramp providing sea access for people with special needs. As facilities may change seasonally, check conditions before visiting. Nearby Kandarola Beach is also accessible by water taxi from Rab or Palit. JUXTA MARE comprises 13 discovery points along the promenade from Banjol to Barbat.
A Taste of Rab
Rabska torta is a distinctive culinary souvenir from the island and part of Rab’s culinary tradition. It is made according to a closely guarded traditional recipe. This local flavor adds to the town’s cultural and architectural impressions.
