Kampor: Forest Trails and Cultural History

When planning a trip to Kampor, you can take its forest landscape, trails, and cultural history into account. The village is part of the Dundo Forest Reserve and has beaches as well as hiking and cycling trails. Dundo and the trails through Kampor

Dundo is a 101.08-hectare special reserve for forest vegetation, established in 1949. The forest is considered one of the best-preserved holm oak forests in the Mediterranean. A branch of the Rab Premužić Trail passes through Dundo. Built using dry-stone construction, it is considered a cultural heritage site. This trail therefore combines time in the forest with a historic structure.

The 14-kilometer Rab–Maman Trail also passes through Kampor. Premužić Trail No. 2 is 15 kilometers long and runs from Kampor through Dundo to the south coast of Kalifront; it then continues along the coast to Frkanj and St. Euphemia Bay. The distances give you a specific point of reference for comparing the two routes, while their described courses lead to different destinations.

There is a practical limitation to Trail No. 2: it runs mostly along forest paths and is not suitable for bicycles. Kampor does have cycling trails, but this general option does not apply to every individual trail. Check the current trail conditions locally before setting out. On the Rab–Maman Trail, hikers can take the bus in Kampor or Dumići if they begin to tire; check the current timetable in advance.

Monastery and collections

The Monastery of St. Euphemia in Kampor was founded in 1444. The monastery church houses a polyptych by Antonio and Bartolomeo Vivarini. Part of the monastery is home to the Ethnographic Museum of the City of Rab, and the monastery library holds around 7,000 rare books and 34 incunabula. These different collections make the monastery an important cultural consideration when planning your trip, alongside the trails and landscape.

The museum of the Franciscan monastery in Kampor includes church art and silverware, manuscripts and missals from the 15th century, ethnographic objects from the 19th and 20th centuries, and numismatic collections. The specific presentation of the collections may vary. The museum holdings and the library represent different aspects of cultural heritage: the former include several types of art and other objects, while the latter holds rare books and incunabula.

Memorial and local history

The Kampor cemetery commemorates the victims of the Italian concentration camp on Rab, which operated from 1942 to 1943. Architect Edvard Ravnikar designed the memorial in 1953. Its layout includes an entrance plaza, a burial ground, a central plaza, and a mausoleum; a dry-stone wall along the coast encloses the site. These elements give the site a clear spatial layout and combine its commemorative purpose with distinctive architectural design.

In October 2025, the City of Rab reported restoration work on the entrance wall and doors, the plazas, the landscaping, the name plaques, and the central obelisk. Since conditions at the site may change, it is advisable to check before visiting. The memorial offers a different focus from the trails through Dundo or the monastery collections: it centers on the history of the camp and remembrance of its victims.

Coast and culinary character

Kampor also has beaches, organic food, and rustic restaurants. Along with the hiking and cycling trails, these features add to the picture of a place whose appeal is not limited to a single attraction. When planning your itinerary, you can therefore treat the described routes, cultural sites, and coast as separate activities rather than combining them into a single tour.
