On Rab, medieval urban history, sacred architecture, and trails through forest and coastal landscapes come together. The island is also home to Rabska Fjera, a festival whose tradition dates back to 1364. Whether you want to discover culture or spend time outdoors, the island offers a range of ways to shape your stay.

Townscape, festival, and island history

The old town of Rab is surrounded by ancient city walls, and four church towers define its skyline. Rabska Fjera is a special event for culture enthusiasts: it is considered Croatia’s oldest and largest medieval summer festival. The tradition began on July 21, 1364; today, the festival takes place every year from July 25 to 27. Check the program and specific event dates for your travel year.

During Rabska Fjera, craft workshops offer insights into traditional production methods, including the making of belts and fragrant pomades. This means that craftsmanship is also in the spotlight alongside the festivities. If you want to plan your stay around these days, the annual festival dates can be a useful starting point.

Another way to explore the island’s history is JUXTA MARE, a virtual museum about boat and shipbuilding and fishing. Its 13 discovery points are located along the promenade from Banjol to Barbat. Videos, photographs, texts, and augmented reality present the topics at each station; visitors can access the content by scanning QR codes on signs beside the points.

The religious buildings also tell stories from different eras. The Monastery of St. Euphemia in Kampor was founded in 1444; part of the monastery was converted into the Ethnographic Museum of the City of Rab. The Church of St. Peter in Supetarska Draga dates from 1059 and is widely considered one of the best-preserved Romanesque buildings on the Adriatic coast. Its Gothic bell tower is considered one of the oldest on the Croatian Adriatic coast.

Forest trails, coastal paths, and landscapes

KomrÄŤar Park combines wooded hills with paths that descend to the beaches of Rab. Kamenjak offers a different perspective on the landscape: its summit is 408 metres high. The limestone massif is the highest and largest on the island and protects it from cold northerly influences.

Those who want to compare different routes will find both shorter and longer options. The Rab Archeological (T)races route includes 34 information points and a total of about 40 kilometres of educational trails. They run through Kampor, Lopar, and Supetarska Draga and also pass through protected landscape areas. The accompanying app works offline and is intended for walkers, cyclists, hikers, and people interested in nature and cultural heritage.

For a cycling trip, the Rab MTB 1 mountain bike route leads to Dundo Forest, follows the southern Premužić Trail, and continues to the Kalifront Peninsula. The forests of Kalifront are well suited to leisurely walks; the hilly areas and trails are considered undemanding and suitable for older visitors, too. Conditions may vary.

Depending on the route selected, the Rab-Maman trail is about 14 kilometres long. Much of it follows wide paths and coastal trails that are also suitable for cyclists. Another option is the 12-kilometre trekking route from Mišnjak to Lopar, which the description says is suitable for Škraping—walking over rocky terrain. The Premuziceva-1 geological trail is eight kilometres long and crosses the island’s main ridge as well as the hidden Fruga Valley. There are no rest stops or drinking water along this trail; check trail conditions before setting out and plan your supplies accordingly.

Getting there and culinary tradition

The ferry crossing from Stinica to Mišnjak on the southern side of Rab is listed as taking 15 minutes and operating year-round. Check the timetable before travelling. A passenger-only catamaran connection between Rijeka and the port of Rab Town is also described as operating year-round. According to the available information, there is one departure per day; the journey takes one hour and 45 minutes. Confirm current departure times before travelling.

Rab is also home to Rab cake, a speciality with a history of more than 800 years. Along with its historic buildings, trails, and Rabska Fjera, it offers another glimpse of Rab. When planning your hotel stay, you can start with the interests you want your trip to focus on, such as town history, festival days, hiking, or cycling.
