Koprivnica-Križevci County brings together a river basin, protected landscapes and a diverse cultural heritage. It lies in the Drava Basin between the Hungarian border along the Drava and the forested Kalnik and Bilogora mountains. Koprivnica has a cohesive historic town centre; nature highlights range from Kalnik to the open sand expanses of Đurđevački Pijesci. For your trip, you can focus on urban history, landscapes, cuisine or festivals.

Landscapes between Kalnik and Podravina

Kalnik is protected as an important landscape. The reasons include its geological and geomorphological features, as well as the diversity of its landscape and flora. West of Križevci lies Župetnica Forest Park, covering 62.33 hectares and designated for recreation and leisure.

The Đurđevački Pijesci offer a different kind of landscape. The protected reserve covers 19.5 hectares and is the last unforested remnant within the county of the 12-kilometre-long Podravina sand belt. The natural features therefore differ considerably: at Kalnik, geological formations and the diversity of the landscape and flora take centre stage, while the Đurđevački Pijesci are an open sandy landscape. Župetnica adds a forest park, whose stated purpose is recreation and leisure.

Urban history and cultural heritage in Koprivnica

Koprivnica’s old town centre is preserved as a unified cultural and historical monument complex. In the historic lower town, Zrinski, Jelačić and Florijanski Squares bring together buildings dating from the Baroque period to the Secession; there is also a bicycle monument. The squares and varied architectural styles give the townscape several distinct historical layers.

The religious buildings also tell different stories. St Nicholas’s Church was probably built on the foundations of a medieval Franciscan church; it acquired its present form before 1657. The Franciscan history of the monastery and Church of St Anthony dates back to around 1290. The Baroque monastery was built between 1675 and 1685.

A former Baroque town hall now houses the town museum, with archaeological and ethnographic collections. The historic town centre thus brings together architectural history and collection themes: St Nicholas’s Church points to medieval origins and its later form, while the monastery and Church of St Anthony preserve a distinct Franciscan history.

Nature trails and visitor facilities

At the Đurđevački Pijesci, there are information boards, signposts, a visitor stopping area and a viewpoint or observation platform. The nature trail complements these facilities with interpretive panels, some of which have been adapted for visitors with disabilities. There is also an insect hotel, bicycle parking, benches and rest facilities. Check the current condition of the facilities before your trip.

The protected area authority has held workshops and field classes there; the availability of scheduled sessions may vary. A visitor management project aimed to enable visits to be controlled and to have as little negative impact as possible on protected species. It also envisaged establishing a trained group of interpreters.

In Legrad, at the confluence of the Mura and Drava, a nature trail features ten panels on biodiversity and nature conservation, as well as an observation tower. Check the trail’s current accessibility before visiting.

Culinary traditions and wine

The traditional cuisine of Podravina and Prigorje is shaped by Austrian and Hungarian influences. Its specialities include meat, river fish and cured meats. A distinctive Christmas tradition is Bregofska pita: in Bregi, the cake has traditionally been baked at Christmas for more than 200 years. In 2012, it was declared an intangible cultural heritage of Croatia.

Viticulture is also shaped by two areas: Koprivnica–Đurđevac and Kalnik. These include the Đurđevac and Križevci–Kalnik wine routes. Visits to individual winegrowers or wineries can be arranged in advance and offer a chance to enjoy the hosts’ hospitality. As arrangements vary by establishment, it is advisable to book directly before your visit.

Festivals and activities

Key tourism themes include cultural festivals and cycling tourism, as well as nature stays; cultural heritage also encompasses naïve art and religious tourism. Leisure activities include cycling routes, Drava Adventure, Podravina Adventure, rafting and canoeing on the Drava, and Bike&Boat Podravina. Availability may vary between operators.

For cycling travellers, infrastructure along the European Amazon Route in Podravina includes route markers, information boards and rest stops. Check route conditions before setting off. At the Renesansni Festival in Koprivnica, the town walls provide a historic setting for a medieval market featuring traditional crafts, historical scenes, period foods and drinks such as mead, beer and wine.

At Križevačko Veliko Spravišće in Križevci, held in mid-June, the staged reconciliation between the plum growers of Kalnik and the residents of Križevci takes centre stage. The story is linked to the event of 1242 in Kalnik. The Picokijada in Đurđevac includes a procession celebrating Podravina customs and an exhibition of traditional cakes; its central stage performance is recognised as an intangible cultural heritage of Croatia. Event dates and programmes vary each year. Check them before planning your trip.
