The Municipality of Sokolovac can be explored through its forests, water and history. Dugačko brdo is a clearly defined protected area; at Stankov vrh, a summit marker and seating provide practical orientation. The historical Military Frontier, coal mining and the religious buildings in Lepavina complement the natural attractions. You can plan your trip around whether you would like to focus on protected areas, local history or the accommodation options available in the area.

Forest Landscape and Protected Areas

Dugačko brdo is in the Municipality of Sokolovac, at an elevation of about 250 metres. Together with nearby slopes of Bilogora, it is part of the Koprivnica tourism, recreation and hunting zone. The forest vegetation reserve was established in 1973 and covers 10.91 hectares. Beech dominates this mixed forest; sessile oaks and hornbeams also grow there.

A permanent one-hectare ecological experimental site is included in the Man and the Biosphere (MAB) programme. Human intervention is prohibited there, except for multidisciplinary research. The protected area extends beyond the reserve: Dugačko brdo is part of the Bilogora and Kalničko gorje Natura 2000 Special Protection Area for birds (HR1000008). This area includes Sokolovac and the significant landscape of Kalnik.

The wider landscape of Bilogora and Kalničko gorje is hilly and forested. Alongside oak, hornbeam and beech forests, it includes meadows and wet meadows in the stream valleys. This regional context helps place the reserve within a larger, varied landscape without conflating the features of individual locations.

Watercourses and Orientation

Stankov vrh is accessible by car and lies about 50 metres from a macadam road. There is a marker at the summit, along with several wooden benches and tables. Facilities and road conditions may change; check both before your visit.

Ladislavski lug is part of a hilly forestry area on the northwestern slopes of Bilogora. Streams run through the area, including the Velika Rijeka. The source of the Velika stream, also called Velika Rijeka, is above Gornja Velika. The place names therefore also provide a practical reference for the water landscape.

Traces of Military History and Mining

During the period of the Military Frontier, Sokolovac was the centre of a military company within the Đurđevac Regiment. Another historical connection is coal mining: the Sokolovac–Lepavina mines developed on the slopes of Bilogora and opened in 1871 to supply coal for the Zagreb–Budapest railway line.

Lepavina is home to the monastery and parish church of the Presentation of the Lord. Together with the history of the military company and the mines, this place reveals more aspects of the region beyond its forests and waterways.

Accommodation and Regional Cuisine

Lovačka kuća Sokolovac is located in Prnjavor Lepavinski, near the Vidra Polum hunting ground, and offers accommodation in a natural setting. The double rooms have a telephone, television, bathroom and separate entrances. Free parking is available for guests; there is a children’s playground beside the restaurant terrace. The house also displays a collection of hunting trophies.

Facilities, parking arrangements and the exhibition may change. Check the current details and whether the accommodation is operating before your trip. The restaurant serves local specialities such as game goulash, wild boar and freshwater fish; the menu may change. In the wider Podravina and Prigorje regions, traditional dishes are influenced by Austrian and Hungarian cuisine.

Lovačka kuća can organise team-building activities, hunting tourism and sport fishing. As availability and permits may change, check the relevant conditions in advance.
