Sokolovac – Nature, History and Cuisine
Accommodation in Sokolovac
Sokolovac brings together nature, history and regional cuisine. Rajčevica is the highest peak in the Bilogora range, while Dugačko brdo is a protected botanical forest vegetation reserve. The history of the Military Frontier adds another historical perspective to the landscape. You can weigh up the peak, the protected area, the historical context and local specialities as different focuses for your trip.
Accommodation and activities
Lovačka kuća Sokolovac offers accommodation and a restaurant. Facilities also include a children’s playground and a trophy collection. There are also opportunities for hunting tourism, sport fishing and team building. If you are travelling with children, you can consider the playground as a specific feature when making your choice. The other offerings may appeal to different interests: nature and hunting, fishing or group activities. If any of these is important to your trip, check its availability in advance; facilities and availability may change.
Regional cuisine
The restaurant serves local specialities, including game goulash, wild boar dishes and freshwater fish. The selection ranges from game dishes to fish, giving you specific options to consider if regional cuisine is part of your travel plans. As the dishes on offer may change, ask about the current selection if you have a particular dish in mind.
Rajčevica and Dugačko brdo
Rajčevica, also known among hikers as Stankov vrh, is the highest peak in the Bilogora range. There is a marker at the summit, as well as benches and tables. From the main road, the summit can be reached by car and a short walk. So allow time for the walk as well as the drive. Access conditions may change seasonally; check them before setting out.
Dugačko brdo is a protected botanical forest vegetation reserve. It was established in 1973 and covers 10.91 hectares. Together with nearby slopes of the Bilogora range, it is part of a tourism, recreation and hunting zone. If you are choosing between the two nature-focused destinations, Rajčevica offers a peak with a described access route and facilities; at Dugačko brdo, the focus is on its protected status, area and place within the zone. If you plan to visit the reserve, check access locally.
History of the Military Frontier
History offers another way to explore Sokolovac. The town was the centre of the Sokolovac Company within the Đurđevac Regiment. More intensive settlement began at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. These two facts highlight different aspects: the company places Sokolovac within a military structure, while the date gives a timeframe for the development of the settlement. This lets you include the history of the Military Frontier in your exploration of the area, alongside its landscape and cuisine.
