Glass paintings, rural motifs and a distinctive artistic tradition shape the cultural character of the Municipality of Hlebine. In the center of Hlebine, the Galerija naivne umjetnosti Hlebine introduces visitors to the history of the Hlebine School. Church art, traditional crafts and regional dishes are also among the features that distinguish the town and municipality.

Naive Art and Its History in Hlebine

The Hlebine School emerged in the early 1930s: Krsto Hegedušić set it in motion after seeing works by Ivan Generalić and Franjo Mraz. Naive painting in Podravina draws on scenes from rural life and peaceful landscapes, uses vivid local colors and is particularly known for painting on glass. This makes it possible to explore the art not only through individual artists, but also through recurring motifs and a distinctive technique.

The Galerija naivne umjetnosti Hlebine was founded in 1968 as a branch of the Muzej grada Koprivnice, in a purpose-built museum and gallery building. The sculpture park was added in 1974; in 1985, the gallery received the Ivan Generalić museum collection. Today, the collection of naive art comprises just over 500 museum objects: paintings, sculptures, drawings and prints. Glass paintings by first- and second-generation artists of the Hlebine School include works by Ivan Generalić, Franjo Mraz, Mirko Virius, Franjo Filipović, Dragan Gaži, Josip Generalić, Francina Dolenec, Mijo Kovačić and Ivan Večenaj. Since 2016, the collection has held the status of a cultural asset of the Republic of Croatia. A well-known work in this context is Ivan Generalić’s “Rogati konj,” considered one of his outstanding works from the 1960s.

The Galerija Hlebine permanently displays a museum exhibition of paintings donated by Ivan Generalić. Those interested in the family’s art history will find further cultural points of interest at the gallery and studio of Josip Generalić, established in 1995. Stara kuća Ivana Generalića is a memorial museum that opened to the public in 1992. The house of the Hegedušić brothers is also part of the area’s history: Krsto Hegedušić was a member of the Zemlja group from 1929 to 1936, while Željko Hegedušić is associated with surrealist work.

Church, Art Program and Crafts

The Church of St. Catherine was built in 1834 on the site of an older wooden church. It stands in the center of the town, at the crossroads of the roads to Koprivnica and Molve, and features late Baroque and Classicist elements. Inside the church is a Stations of the Cross created with works by naive artists. The organ dates from 1837 and was built by the Varaždin organ builder Ignatz Petter. Its architecture, paintings and organ make the church a subject in its own right alongside the gallery collections.

Other cultural sites add to this picture: an Ivan Generalić fresco from 1954 can be seen in the elementary school atrium. The ethnographic house Janičina hiža was established in 1999. The Hlebine School is also a cultural and tourism program featuring artists’ gatherings, workshops, art colonies, a naive art fair and courses. The School of Painting and Sculpture includes more than two hundred artists from different generations. The program thus connects the history of art with various forms of artistic exchange.

At the Stari Zanati estate, visitors can make bread or lepinja and discover traditional crafts with the potter Davor, painter Zlatko and blacksmith Ervin. The estate is designed in an ethnographic style and welcomes groups and individuals of up to 30 people by prior arrangement. Guests are offered traditional dishes from Podravina, prepared according to old recipes using ingredients from the estate and surrounding area. Seasonal events include the Čvarkijada and the Days of Rakija; check the dates before visiting.

Landscape and Regional Impressions

The Municipality of Hlebine lies on the right bank of the Drava. The municipality also includes artificial lakes used for fishing by anglers from Podravina. These landscape features add another theme to the cultural focus: regional cuisine, crafts and the river landscape offer different ways to experience the area, alongside its art history.
