Mljet can be explored through several travel themes: protected nature, trails for hiking and cycling, and local wines and food. Mljet National Park is the oldest marine protected area in the Mediterranean region. Check trail conditions in advance when planning an outing.

Nature and trails on Mljet

The national park has trails for hiking and cycling. Another natural area is Saplunara, which includes the two sandy coves of Velika Saplunara and Mala Saplunara and has been protected as a significant landscape since 1965. The national park and the protected landscape are distinct aspects of Mljet’s nature.

The island also has a distinct appeal for food and drink enthusiasts: Mljet is known for its white and red wines, goat cheese and honey. If you are comparing destinations, these themes can help you get oriented—for example, by considering whether you would prefer to focus your stay more on nature and outdoor activities or on local food and drink.

Island landscapes and starry skies

Dubrovnik-Neretva County encompasses a coastal area with islands such as Korčula, Mljet and Lastovo, as well as the Lower Neretva Valley and its coast. Lastovo adds a nature park of its own to the regional picture: the Lastovo Islands Nature Park comprises 46 islands, islets and reefs, including Lastovo and Sušac.

There are more than 200 kilometers of hiking trails on Lastovo; the hiking and mountain trails are marked with wooden signposts. Check trail conditions locally. Lastovo is also known for having one of the darkest night skies in Europe. The Milky Way is visible to the naked eye; other galaxies can be observed with a low-power telescope. By comparison, Mljet’s main attractions are its national park, trails and the protected landscape of Saplunara. This helps distinguish the nature experiences offered by the two island destinations.

Cultural sites in Dubrovnik-Neretva County

The region’s cultural sites are also spread across different locations. Lučica on Lastovo is a preserved Baroque fishing village and a significant medieval cultural and historical complex. Lučica is a ten-minute walk from the village of Lastovo. Rača Cave, on Lastovo’s southern coast, has been protected since 1965 and is an archaeological site with traces of Illyrian and Roman presence.

Vela Spila is a prehistoric archaeological cave site. Visitors can reach it via a 2.5-kilometer road from Kale Bay in Vela Luka, or by a 950-meter footpath over Pinski Rat. The two distances refer to different routes; it is advisable to check opening hours before visiting.

Other examples of the county’s cultural heritage include the Franciscan monastery on the island of Badija, opposite the town of Korčula, and Dubrovnik’s Old Town, which is under UNESCO protection. The fortification walls stretch for 5.5 kilometers between Ston and Mali Ston. They are protected by around 40 towers and five fortresses. These sites add further regional highlights to the islands’ nature and cultural themes, without equating them with Mljet.

Regional experiences and trip planning

For ten years, the Ston Salt Festival has brought together the history of the Ston saltworks with art, local customs, educational activities and gastronomy. Visitors can take guided tours of the saltworks, learn about the salt-making process and the production of fleur de sel, and sample wines from the Pelješac Peninsula and local specialties. Check the event dates and program before your trip.

In the Lower Neretva area, trips by traditional boats through narrow canals and side channels are a visitor experience. Hosts show how people along the Neretva fish and grow citrus fruits. Mandarin-picking packages may include a traditional boat trip through the delta, picking mandarins directly from the orchards, and tasting freshly picked fruit. As this is a seasonal experience, check dates and providers in advance.

Ferry connections to Mljet

Mljet has a daily ferry connection with Dubrovnik; in summer, there are ferry connections with KorÄŤula and Lastovo. Check the timetable before your trip, as the connections are seasonal. Together with the nature and cultural themes, this information can help you choose the focus of your trip.
