Cres: Nature, Trails and Maritime Heritage
Accommodation in Cres
Cres combines striking natural landscapes with traces of a long cultural history. The island is one of the few remaining habitats of the rare and endangered griffon vulture. The population on Cres is the only one in the world that nests directly on cliffs above the sea. In the centre of the island lies the large freshwater lake Vransko Lake; more than 1,400 plant species also grow on Cres, including wild and medicinal herbs. These distinctive features give nature experiences on the island a character of their own.
Hiking trails, historic paths and cycling routes
Cres has about 300 kilometres of marked trails for hiking. They connect the island’s rugged interior with the coast. Another option is the 75-kilometre network of historic educational trails, which connects to the Via Apsyrtides. This cross-island route runs from Cape Jablanac, the northernmost point of Cres, to Cape Radovan at the southernmost point of the island of Ilovik. Seven mountain paths, seven hiking trails and three cycling routes have been laid out in the forests of Tramuntana.
A variety of routes are also available for cycling. An approximately 15-kilometre gravel route leads from Cres Marina to Valun and onward in the direction of Pernat, Podol, ZbiÄŤina and Lubenice. A cycling route also runs from Podol parallel to Vransko Lake, with views of the lake and the surrounding natural landscape.
Museums and buildings on Cres
The town museum is housed in Arsan Palace, the oldest patrician palace in Cres. Its eight sections include archaeological finds from island life, dating from prehistory to the late Middle Ages. The ethnographic collection features everyday objects, agricultural and fishing tools, and regional clothing from the 18th to the 20th century. In the town, the Forteca Tower also recalls the former fortification system: it is the only one of the five towers that remains.
In Lubenice stands the 15th-century Church of Saint Anthony the Hermit, known for its exceptional acoustics. Also in Lubenice, the Sheep Farming Museum tells the story of wool from the indigenous Cres sheep. In Martinšćica, the Muzej Andrija Linardić is housed in a 350-year-old country estate belonging to the Italian Sforza family, dating to the mid-17th century. Its exhibitions include a permanent display about Andrija Linardić, an ethnographic exhibition about the region and traditional fishing equipment.
In Beli, the Griffon Vulture Visitor and Rescue Centre brings together natural and cultural heritage. A multimedia exhibition explores griffon vultures and the lives of Tramuntana’s residents in the northern part of the island. It offers a way to consider species conservation alongside the cultural history of this island region.
Maritime tradition and local events
Creski kaić is a seven-day cultural, sporting and entertainment event dedicated to preserving the intangible cultural heritage associated with seafaring and fishing. During the event, a maritime history trail is set up along the harbour promenade in Cres, with exhibitions and workshops about the traditional Cres boat. The main programme features a regatta and an exhibition of traditional wooden sailing boats in Cres Bay.
Other events have their own themes: at Brudetijada, teams compete to prepare brudet, a fish stew. After the dishes have been judged by a jury, visitors can taste them and choose their favourite. The Days of Cres Lamb and Olive Oil take place in spring and last a week; during that time, restaurants on the island serve lamb dishes. The Tramuntana Days are considered the oldest regularly held local event. The programme includes klapa singing performances, photo exhibitions, and opera and theatre performances. The traditional Creski Semenj fair is associated with the Feast of Our Lady of the Snows and was first mentioned in a decree of the Republic of Venice on 14 August 1543.
Getting here and activities at sea
The Brestova–Porozina ferry connects Cres with Istria; the crossing takes about 25 minutes. The Valbiska–Merag ferry connects the island with the eastern Kvarner coast, also with an approximate crossing time of 25 minutes. As these times may vary depending on operations, check the current timetable before travelling. SUP boards and kayaks are available to rent on Cres for recreational activities on the open sea. If you are planning to use them, check availability for your travel dates in advance.
