Beli: Discover Cultural Heritage and the Coast
Accommodation in Beli
Beli: Elevation and Historical Layers
As an acropolis settlement, Beli stands on a hill 130 metres above the eastern coast of northern Cres. The site was already a prehistoric hillfort; later, the Roman settlement of Caput Insulae was located here. Archaeological remains at the present-day site include a Roman temple and a forum. This sequence places Beli in two historical layers: the hillfort dates to prehistory, while Caput Insulae belongs to the Roman period.
Protected Buildings and Roman Traces
An extract from the Croatian Register of Cultural Property dated 12 March 2024 lists Beli’s historic complex as protected cultural property. The Chapel of Saint Anthony the Abbot in the cemetery, the Church of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary in the Temple in Beli, and the olive mill known as the “toš” are also listed as protected immovable cultural property. The protection therefore covers both the complex as a whole and individual named buildings: two religious buildings and an olive mill.
Another Roman trace is the Roman Bridge near Beli. It is about 2,000 years old, eight metres long and the only bridge from that period preserved along the coast. Unlike the temple and forum, it is a single surviving structure with a specific length. Thus, Beli’s archaeological remains and named bridge stand side by side as distinct points of connection to Roman history.
Hiking Trail, Visitor Centre and Activities
Tramuntana II is a five-kilometre hiking trail from Beli to Frantin and back. The total distance includes both the outward and return legs. As trail conditions may change, check the latest conditions before setting out. The Visitor and Griffon Vulture Rescue Centre has a multimedia exhibition about griffon vultures and life in Tramuntana. It also hosts occasional photography exhibitions and children’s workshops, and provides information about the rescue centre’s work. The trail and the centre offer different highlights: a set-distance hike and an exhibition about griffon vultures and life in Tramuntana.
The Beli zip line starts 35 metres above sea level and ends by the caves at the end of the beach. Beli Beach also has a diving centre. Check the current operating status of both activities before your visit.
Beach and Access
Beli Beach is a well-maintained natural pebble beach next to the village’s small harbour. The two local highlights are distinct: the settlement is on the hill, while the beach is by the harbour. You can drive to a car park by the beach; alternatively, park in the village and walk down from there. Parking conditions and fees may change. Check the latest information before your visit.
