Belej can be understood through its settlement history, sacred art and a challenging cycling loop. These themes can help you assess the village as a destination for a stay that suits your interests: its village history traces the development of the place, while feast days and the cycling route offer different reasons to visit.

Local History and Stone Heritage

Belej’s layout developed from three former shepherd settlements that later grew together into one village. Parts of Belej lie within the historical protection zone for cultural ensembles, Category C, described as an ambient protection zone. Together, the settlement history and protection status offer two different insights into the village: its development and the planning classification of specific areas.

A previously damaged, 185-metre-long dry-stone wall beside the D100 state road in Belej was restored in 2015 through the KAMENI MOST project. In a dry-stone wall, stones are fitted together without mortar. Here, a specific construction type, a precise restoration year and a named stretch of road come together.

Church Art and Feast Days

The wooden Baroque statues of Saint George and Saint Roch are part of the older artistic collection in Belej’s parish church. Sacred art and the feast days of the two saints offer different reasons to visit: Saint George is celebrated in Belej on 23 April, and Saint Roch on 16 August. The event programme may vary. If you are planning a trip around a celebration, check the current programme in advance.

The Sea and the Cycling Route

Within the Belej planning area, the maritime part of the port of Zela lies within the HR3000161 Cres-Lošinj area, which is designated as a dolphin reserve. A facility for communal berths has been built on an existing breakwater at Luka Zela–Koromačno. Berth regulations may change; if they matter to your plans, check the latest information in advance.

A challenging 61-kilometre cycling loop runs from Cres via Orlec, Belej and Plat, and back to Cres. The surface alternates between asphalt and gravel. The distance refers to the entire loop, not to a route within Belej. For planning your ride, both the challenging rating and the changing surfaces are relevant; check trail conditions locally.

Culture in the Wider Destination of Mali Lošinj

In the wider destination of Mali Lošinj, the Apoxyomenos Museum is dedicated to a single artefact. It opened in May 2016 in Kvarner Palace, in the centre of Mali Lošinj. Fritzi Palace displays two of Mali Lošinj’s most important art collections: the Piperata Collection of Old Masters and the Andro Vid Mihičić Collection of Croatian Masters. The latter comprises around 360 works of art.

The Osor Archaeological Collection is also part of the cultural offering in the wider destination of Mali Lošinj. It is housed in a Renaissance building constructed in the first half of the 15th century. The building was protected as a cultural monument in 1964. These cultural sites add art collections and archaeological history to the picture of Mali Lošinj.

When looking for a hotel in Belej, you can start with the purpose of your trip: local history and sacred art offer a different focus from the challenging 61-kilometre loop.
