Osor combines a protected historic townscape with archaeological collections and trails on Osoršćica. If you are looking for a hotel, you can plan your stay around your preferred focus: local history and collections, or a longer hike. The specific route and walking-time details provide a basis for planning.

Osor’s History in the Townscape

Osor’s historic townscape is registered in Croatia as protected cultural heritage under designation Z-3081. The settlement dates from prehistoric times to the present and flourished during the Roman period. Osor was then an important point on the eastern Adriatic shipping route. Beneath today’s town square lie the paving stones of the Roman forum.

Osor Cathedral was built between 1463 and 1498. Its main altar held relics of Saint Gaudentius, the bishop and patron saint of Osor. Another historical fact is that Cres and Lošinj once formed a single island called Apsyrtides.

Collections and Archaeological Traces

The Osor Archaeological Collection is housed in the former Renaissance town hall with loggia, a building that opened to the public in 1889. The first floor of the former town hall displays mainly objects from the early Roman imperial period. The lapidarium and exhibitions include material spanning prehistory, antiquity and the Middle Ages. This includes the Osor Creed, presented as the oldest surviving stone evidence of the Christian faith.

The Osor Palaeontological Collection is unique in the Cres-Lošinj archipelago and presents the animal world from before the arrival of humans. Parts of the site at the Abbey of St Peter in Osor have been excavated and conserved. These include a three-aisled basilica, adjoining monastic buildings and graves. Osor thus brings together natural history, archaeological finds and sacred architecture as distinct subjects.

The Osor Time Machine is a VR experience featuring twelve locations in Osor. An interactive task leads to a marten sculpture: visitors are said to gain good luck by stroking its tail. If you plan to take part in this experience, check the current access conditions in advance.

Osoršćica extends for about 20 kilometres along northern Lošinj. The summit can be approached from Osor and offers views across the Lošinj archipelago; the mountain range is also known for its many caves. The 18 kilometres refers to the St Gaudentius Trail to Nerezine, while the approximately 20 kilometres describes the extent of Osoršćica—two distinct reference figures for your planning.
