Discover Losinj: maritime culture and nature
Accommodation in Losinj
Lošinj combines maritime heritage with a deeply indented coastline and outdoor experiences. In Mali Lošinj, the Museum of Apoxyomenos was established as the sculpture’s permanent home; above the town, on Umpiljak Hill, lies Providenca, a cultural landscape centred on the island’s natural, cultural and maritime heritage.
Museums and maritime history
The Tower displays a life-size replica of the Apoxyomenos, a bronze sculpture discovered in the waters around Veli Lošinj. In Veli Lošinj, the Kula Museum-Gallery Centre (The Tower) presents Lošinj’s maritime tradition and rich seafaring history in a permanent exhibition. This places seafaring and island traditions alongside the story of the sculpture.
Nerezinac offers another perspective: the exhibition on board is divided into three sections and covers crew life, food, cargo, maritime routes and shipbuilding. Nerezinac is included on the Republic of Croatia’s Register of Protected Cultural Goods. At Providenca, a self-guided walk with six interpretation points presents Lošinj as an island of captains. Check the latest details of the experience before planning your visit.
Coastline, trails and viewpoints
Lošinj is a Croatian island with a deeply indented coastline. Many bays have low, easily accessible shores, which are mostly rocky. In some places, white pebbles gradually give way to a sandy seabed. The shores and seabeds therefore vary from bay to bay.
The Lošinj archipelago has hiking and cycling trails of varying lengths and difficulty. They lead to viewpoints, beaches and bays, fishing villages, secluded chapels and villages, shepherds’ shelters, and old military fortifications. Destinations range from scenic spots to settlements and historic structures, and the difficulty level also varies.
One specific hiking option is the Osoršćica–Nerezine Traverse. It runs for about 10 kilometres along the northern part of the island and reaches an elevation of 588 metres at Televrin. Below the summit, the route passes the Church of Sv. Mikula and the Sv. Gaudencija Cave. The approximate distance and elevation provide guidance for planning, without implying that other trails have the same requirements.
Fragrance garden, picnics and snorkelling
The Lošinj Fragrance Garden contains more than 250 native aromatic plant species. Its planting areas are enclosed by traditional dry-stone walls known as Gromače. The combination of plant diversity and traditional construction defines the garden’s character. Activities include fragrance walks, workshops, tastings, exhibitions, performances and competitions.
Providenca’s picnic at the Captain’s Table also connects local specialities with the maritime past: the picnic basket includes specialities associated with the captains of Lošinj and the island’s seafaring history. Programme details and reservation information may change; check them before making a firm booking for an activity.
Those who want to explore the underwater world can find snorkelling spots around Lošinj and the nearby islands of Ilovik, Susak and Unije. The underwater landscapes described include colourful fish, Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows and hidden bays. Coastal bays and underwater worlds thus offer different kinds of nature experience.
Plan your arrival and hotel location
Lošinj can be reached by land, sea or air. The island’s larger ports include Mali Lošinj, Veli Lošinj and Nerezine. This information provides a general guide but is not a substitute for a timetable: check ferry and flight schedules separately before travelling.
