Mali Losinj: Museums, Coast and Maritime Heritage
Accommodation in Mali Losinj
Mali Lošinj combines museum visits, maritime heritage, water activities and a varied coastal landscape. When planning your trip, it helps to consider the different ways to explore: some subjects are presented through exhibitions, while others are explored through a guided program or a self-guided experience. This can help you organize the focus of your stay before looking for a hotel for your trip.
Museums and Maritime Heritage
The Museum of Apoxyomenos is located in Kvarner Palace on the waterfront in Mali Lošinj. The museum is intended to become the permanent home of the Apoxyomenos statue. The exhibition leads visitors through nine scenes and transitional areas to a final room containing the bronze sculpture. The visit is therefore designed as a sequence leading to the work in the last room. Visitors can reach the museum on foot; there is no parking at the museum itself. Municipal parking is available.
Palača Fritzi displays the Piperata Old Masters Collection and the collection of Croatian masters assembled by Andro Vid Mihičić. The latter comprises around 360 works of art. The building’s history is also part of the visit: at the end of the 19th century, it was rebuilt as a historicist palace; before that, it housed the first municipal administration of Mali Lošinj. The art collections and the building’s changing uses thus offer two different perspectives on cultural heritage.
The Lošinjski loger Nerezinac is moored in front of the Museum of Apoxyomenos in Mali Lošinj and serves as a center for presenting maritime heritage. Topics range from the crew, provisions and cargo to sea routes and shipbuilding. Nerezinac is a protected cultural asset of the Republic of Croatia. While the exhibitions at the Museum of Apoxyomenos follow a sculpture and its presentation, Nerezinac explores the working and living conditions of seafaring.
Water, Coast and Guided Experiences
Eleven exhibits are installed at depths of five to 15 meters in the Underwater Archaeological Park in Mali Lošinj. Licensed divers can visit the park. Those without diving experience can access it through Discovery Dive, a program led by a dive instructor. If you plan to take part, it is important to distinguish between an independent visit with a diving certificate and the guided program.
Water activities in the Mali Lošinj area include kayaking around Koludarac, diving, sailing and windsurfing. Lessons are available for windsurfing and sailing. These options cater to different interests, whether you are looking for a kayaking trip, diving, or a chance to try sailing and windsurfing. Which activities you include in your hotel trip depends on what you would like to focus on.
Many bays around Mali Lošinj have low-lying, easily accessible shores. They are mostly rocky, with white pebbles in some places. This gives you a specific picture of the coast to bear in mind when planning: the bays do not all have the same shore material, and rocky stretches characterize many waterfront areas.
More than 250 species of wild aromatic plants grow in Miomirisni Otočki Vrt. Guided visits introduce the island’s flora and the medicinal properties of plants. Visitors can also sample local foods there; the seasonal selection may vary. The garden thus combines botanical themes with a taste of regional products, although the availability of tastings may depend on the season.
Providenca offers the self-guided interpretive tour “Lošinj – Island of Captains.” There is also the “Picnic at the Captain's Table” gastro-and-heritage experience, which combines island cuisine with Lošinj’s maritime heritage. Arrangements in advance may be required for this experience. The two formats differ: on the tour, you follow a self-guided interpretation, while the picnic brings food and history together in a named experience.
