Municipality of Vrbnik: Cliffs, Coast and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Municipality of Vrbnik
In Vrbnik, a steep, 49-metre-high cliff above the sea shapes the townscape. The town has a history spanning more than 900 years: it was an important Frankopan fortress and a Glagolitic and religious centre. In the Municipality of Vrbnik, this heritage combines a striking coastal landscape with a rich cultural history.
Landscape and trails
Northwest of Vrbnik, the Vrbničko polje stretches across a depression covering 211 hectares. The cliff and this broad lowland landscape show different sides of the surrounding area. The Glavine–Mala luka protected area is also a special natural site: it is accessible only on foot or by boat. When visiting, follow the protected area rules in force at the time.
Vrbnik’s hiking trails are part of the marked hiking network on the island of Krk. They lead through hills and rocky landscapes dotted with dry-stone walls and the remains of small churches. From Garica, walking trails lead to the early medieval Church of St. Krševan; other trails lead to Gradec, considered the first Frankopan castle. Below Garica, a bridge dating from the period of French rule also crosses the valley of a small river.
Another way to explore the area is the circular route designated Trekking Route 17: it passes through Vrbnik, Risika, Garica and Kampelje before returning to Vrbnik. This places local walking trails alongside a route linking several named places, without assuming a particular walking time or level of difficulty.
Churches and cultural heritage
In Risika, the Church of St. Jerome was built in 1940 on the site of an earlier church dating from 1861. In the centre of Garica stands the Church of St. Peter, built in 1793. These two churches connect local history with specific construction dates and different historical layers.
In Vrbnik, the 30-metre-high Renaissance bell tower was built in 1527. Its interior was converted into the Museum of Visual Identity in 2000. Another aspect of the area’s cultural heritage is preserved in the Vitezić family library: founded in 1898, it safeguards the legacy of brothers Ivan Josip and Dinko Vitezić, who were born in Vrbnik. It opened to the public in 1910.
The Blaž Baromić and Dragutin Parčić Memorial Printing House, which opened in 2003, contains a replica of the printing presses used in the 16th century, along with their equipment. The Ethnographic Collection of Neda Trinajstić displays, among other things, the folk costume of Vrbnik. At the “Baćin dvor” visitor centre, the region’s history, traditions and cultural heritage are presented; permanent exhibitions invite visitors to explore. Check current opening hours before your visit.
Beaches around Vrbnik
The beaches differ in their coastline and location. Sv. Marek is near the village of Risika, six kilometres from Vrbnik, and is considered the only sandy beach on the island of Krk. It has a car park, sanitary facilities and moorings; pedal boats, sun loungers and parasols are also available to rent. Potovošće is a pebble beach with a sandy seabed. Its facilities include toilets and a car park; parasols and sun loungers are available to rent.
Zgribnica is Vrbnik’s central beach. It has showers and sanitary facilities, as well as sun loungers, parasols and pedal boats for rent. Melska, meanwhile, is a pebble cove with a sandy seabed between the bays of Javna and Sv. Marek. It can be reached by car from Vrbnik or Sv. Marek. Facilities and rentals at the beaches mentioned may change seasonally; check local information before your visit.
Wine and regional context
Vrbnička žlahtina is a white wine made from a grape variety considered indigenous to the wine-growing area of the island of Krk. The Ivan Katunar wine house in Vrbnik offers wine tastings and cellar tours. If you are planning a tour, check availability directly with the venue beforehand.
A broader look at Frankopan heritage leads to the wider destination of the Kvarner Bay: the Putovima Frankopana cultural route includes a total of 17 Frankopan castles and 3 sacred sites in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. The Natura 2000 network there includes 111 sites and covers nearly 75 percent of the land area and 16 percent of the sea area.
