Risika: Beaches and trails for planning your trip
Accommodation in Risika
Risika can be considered as a place to stay based on two specific travel interests: the beach at Sv. Marek and the hiking and cycling routes associated with the area. The beach is near Risika; the routes offer different focuses, from connections between several places to a circular hike with a specified distance. If you are looking for hotels in Risika, these topics can help structure your plans: would you like to make the beach the focus, or would you rather go hiking and cycling?
Beach near Risika: Sv. Marek
Sv. Marek is considered the only sandy beach on the island of Krk and is near Risika; it is six kilometers from Vrbnik. Nearby meadows provide space for sunbathing. In the surrounding area, you will find restaurants, moorings, a parking lot and sanitary facilities; pedal boats, sun loungers and parasols are also available for hire. The infrastructure is permanent, but individual facilities may change or vary seasonally. If rentals or sanitary facilities are important to your stay, check what is currently available before visiting. This will help you assess the beach as a specific part of your trip.
Hiking and cycling routes
The trekking routes connect Risika with Vrbnik, Garica, Kampelje and Sv. Marak. Road cycling routes pass through Risika towards Dobrinj, Kras, Kornić and Šilo. One specific circular hike is the Risika Trail: it is considered moderately difficult, is 14.4 kilometers long, has an elevation gain of 385 meters, and connects Vrbnik with Risika, Melska Cove, Cape Sv. Marak and Javna Cove. The distance, elevation gain and difficulty level give you points of reference for planning your own trip. By contrast, the trekking and road cycling routes focus on connections or directions to the places listed. Conditions and signage on these routes may change; check the current route before setting out.
Culture in the wider destination of Općina Vrbnik
The wider destination of Općina Vrbnik has its own historical highlights. Vrbnik has a history spanning more than 900 years and was an important Frankopan fortress as well as a Glagolitic and religious center. The 30-meter-high Renaissance bell tower was built in 1527. Its interior was converted into the Museum of Visual Identity in 2000: the tower and its later use as a museum thus represent different historical periods.
The cultural institutions also have different focuses. Founded in 1898, the Vitezić family library preserves the legacy of the brothers Ivan Josip Vitezić and Dinko Vitezić, who were born in Vrbnik; it opened to the public in 1910. The Blaž Baromić and Dragutin Parčić Memorial Print House, opened in 2003, contains a replica of the printing presses used in the 16th century, together with their equipment. While the library is associated with the two brothers, the print house focuses on historical printing technology.
The “Baćin dvor” visitor center in Vrbnik preserves and presents the history, traditions and cultural heritage of the region and offers permanent exhibitions. Risika itself also has a historical connection: the Church of St. Jerome was built in 1940 on the site of an earlier church built in 1861. If you are planning a visit, check the current opening hours of each institution.
