Cultural History in Churches and Collections

Vrbnik is considered a place with a 900-year cultural and historical tradition. This is reflected in its medieval fortress, the legacy of the Frankopan family, the Glagolitic tradition, the local dialect, music, dance and customs that are still observed today. Cultural attractions include the Vitezić Family Library, the memorial printing house of Blaž Baromić and Dragutin Parčić, the Neda Trinajstić Ethnographic Collection, the bell tower, the church loggia and Desetinec.

The Church of St John the Baptist, dedicated to Vrbnik’s patron saint, was built in 1323 and expanded in 1611. The Neda Trinajstić Ethnographic Collection displays traditional Vrbnik folk costumes, as well as porcelain sets, furniture, copperware and old photographs donated by local families. Desetinec preserves religious paintings and sculptures from former churches and chapels in Vrbnik, along with archaeological objects from the collection of parish priest Nikola Butković.

South of Vrbnik, the ruins of the Church of St Maurus stand on a hill. They offer views of Vrbnik and the Vinodol Channel. Built in the 11th century in the early Romanesque style, the church is one of the oldest in the area.

Wine and Local Traditions

The PZ Vrbnik wine cellar was built in 1932, and grape processing still takes place on the premises. The PZ Vrbnik tasting room is at Namori 2, 51516 Vrbnik. Arrange your visit in advance and check the opening hours. Valomet is also part of the local wine scene: this sparkling wine is made from Vrbnička Žlahtina grapes and aged 30 metres beneath the cliffs above Vrbnik.

Dani Vina is traditionally held in Vrbnik in late August. The programme includes wine tastings, a market for local products, winery tours, a race, a wine workshop and night cycling. Dates and programmes vary from year to year, so check the latest event information before travelling.
