History and cultural heritage in Općina Malinska-Dubašnica
The bell tower of the Old Cemetery of St Apollinar was built in 1618 and is considered a symbol of Dubašnica. The cemetery also marks the site of Dubašnica’s original parish church. The Chapel of St Andrew is among the oldest surviving chapels in the region. It was originally Romanesque and dates from the 13th or 14th century. The Chapel of St Nicholas was built in the 14th or 15th century; remnants of wall paintings survive on its south wall and on the walls of the sanctuary. Together, these places offer different ways to explore regional history: an early church site, surviving chapels and preserved wall paintings.
The collection in the courtyard of the Franciscan monastery of the Third Order is also part of the cultural heritage of Općina Malinska-Dubašnica. The lapidarium includes Croatian Glagolitic stone monuments, including the Baška Tablet, the Senj Tablet, the Grdoselo fragment, the Krk inscription and the Valun Tablet. The House of Dubašnica Heritage is an old rural home built around the middle of the 19th century for two families. Workshops on traditional gastronomy, forgotten skills, traditional music and the Glagolitic alphabet are held there. Before your trip, check whether a workshop is available on your visit date.
Sensa, a long-standing tradition in Dubašnica, is also part of the region’s culture. Shepherds compete in a race for cheese, popularly known as “Teć za sir.” In Malinska, the DUBoak maritime heritage centre is located on the waterfront. From this historic place, ships loaded with timber sailed to Venice and nearby Rijeka. The region thus brings together rural heritage, sacred art and maritime history, while the B-426 cycling circuit marks Kremenići’s distinct connection to cycling.
