Fabci draws attention to a protected spring and the Strašnica Karst Cave. If you are looking for a hotel in Fabci, the area’s natural and geological features can help guide your choice of destination. The spring and the cave represent different aspects: a traditional communal water source and an unusual karst formation.

The Spring and Karst Landscape in Fabci

The Fabci Spring and its immediate surroundings are protected natural heritage and are classified as a natural monument. The spring just below Fabci is described as an old communal water source. It was used for drinking and washing, as well as for watering livestock. According to tradition, it has never dried up. This use is part of the spring’s history; it does not indicate whether the water is safe to drink today.

Strašnica is a karst cave in Fabci with an explored depth of 142 metres. Underground water has formed a 55-metre-high calcite formation and a large stalagmite there. This geological feature is considered unusual in Istria. The details about the depth and formations give the site a clear geological focus, distinct from the spring’s historical significance.

A field report published in 2018 describes water from the Fabci Spring flowing downhill towards Strašnica. According to the report, a waterfall appears about twenty metres from the cave entrance. The approximate distance and the date belong to this account; they make no statement about current access conditions.

In the wider destination of Općina Višnjan, Višnjan itself lies in western Istria at an elevation of 244 metres, between the Mirna River to the north and Lim Bay to the south. Its old centre stands on a hill and is characterised by closely spaced stone houses and narrow lanes. A Baroque loggia stands on the main square of the historic old town.

Sacred buildings also offer insight into the history of this wider destination. The small Church of St Matthew in Cerion was built in 1588; its façade, with a bell gable and two bells, was renovated in 1935. The Church of St Anthony the Abbot is known for its 14th-century frescoes and graffiti, including Glagolitic inscriptions. These examples differ in date and character and add to the overview of cultural points of interest in Općina Višnjan.

Trails and Group Visits in Općina Višnjan

The trails described offer different points of comparison. The Venetian Lion Trail is 4.5 kilometres long and takes about two and a half hours. It passes through historic Višnjan, from Antun-Korlević Square beneath the arch with the Venetian lion to the old village of Barat and back. The Owl Trail is marked, 7.7 kilometres long, and designed for family hikes. It starts in a small pine grove near the Višnjan cemetery and leads to the Vena viewpoint, from which olive groves, vineyards and the sea can be seen.

The Star Trail is considered an easy, undemanding route for families and recreational cyclists. It starts and ends in front of Višnjan Town Hall and leads to Tičan. There, visitors can see the new observatory building with its telescope dome and the Stone Circle installation. The Venetian Lion Trail is notable for its length and approximate duration; the Owl Trail is characterised by its length, suitability for family hikes and the viewpoint.

Group visits to Višnjan Observatory are available year-round by prior arrangement. The group programme includes an introductory talk on a scientific or astronomical topic, a guided tour of the observatory, the telescope dome and the Stone Circle, and—weather permitting—an outdoor telescope observation. The trails and group programme can therefore be considered as different themes when planning a trip to Općina Višnjan.
