The fields’ appearance changes over the course of the year; trail conditions may also change, especially after weather events.

A separate landscape feature is found by the Dubrava forest: old bauxite mining sites are visible as deep holes along the road. How clearly they can be seen may vary depending on vegetation and maintenance.

History in Višnjan and Šaline

In Višnjan, the Church of Saint Anthony the Abbot stands at the entrance to the old town; it dates from the 13th to 15th centuries. The municipal loggia dates from the 17th century and was reconstructed in 1753. In Šaline stands the 16th-century Church of Saint Roch, which was moved there in 1929.

Višnjan lies in western Istria at an altitude of 244 metres, between the Mirna River to the north and Lim Bay to the south. The old part of town sits on a hill and is characterised by closely spaced stone houses and narrow lanes. There is a Baroque loggia in the main square. In Cerion, the small Church of Saint Matthew was built in 1588; its façade, with a bell gable and two bells, was renovated in 1935.

The new site of the Višnjan Observatory is on Tičan Hill, three kilometres north of Višnjan. The public observatory was registered in 1992; its scientific focus is on small bodies in the Solar System and their interactions with Earth. Group visits are possible year-round by prior arrangement. The group programme includes an introductory lecture on a scientific or astronomical topic, a tour of the observatory, the telescope dome, and the Stone Circle, as well as outdoor telescope viewing in suitable weather conditions. Astrofest is held at the Tičan Observatory complex around the summer solstice, with star-gazing and ceremonial bonfires.
