Radovani brings together historic architectural heritage and a hilly landscape shaped by agriculture. Residential and farm complexes, the Church of St. George, and the cultivation of the fields offer different insights into the place and its history.

18th-century residential and farm complexes

Radovani preserves fine residential and farm complexes dating from the 18th century, a period of prosperity. Their architectural features include carved details. A lintel on one central house is dated 1707 and names Ivo Radovan as village head. This architectural element thus links a specific year with the name of a local official. To understand the village’s history, the complexes are interesting not only as a whole, but also for individual details like these, which preserve a date and a name.

The Romanesque Church of St. George

Beside Radovani stands the single-nave Romanesque Church of St. George. It preserves fragments of frescoes from the first half of the 15th century, as well as Glagolitic graffiti. These include an inscription interpreted as dating from 1440. The fresco fragments and incised characters point to different forms of medieval visual and written heritage. Together with the residential and farm complexes, the church adds another chapter to Radovani’s architectural and cultural history.

Hilly landscape and agriculture

Radovani lies in a hilly landscape with fertile fields. The local agricultural landscape includes vineyards, olive groves, grain cultivation, and livestock farming. It therefore encompasses both different forms of cultivation and animal husbandry. The fields and groves offer a different way of experiencing the place than its historic buildings: alongside its architectural history, the agricultural character of the surroundings comes to the fore.
