Discover Markovac: a Chapel, Winemaking and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Markovac
Discover Markovac through three distinctive themes: a Gothic chapel, a long winemaking tradition and cycling routes that pass through the area. The setting also offers views across much of northern Poreština as far as the sea. This combination provides a practical guide if you are considering Markovac as a destination for your stay.
The Chapel and Its History
The Gothic Chapel of Saint Helena of the Cross in Markovac is dedicated to Saints Helena and Agatha. It dates from the 14th century and was restored in 1876. The church therefore has two distinct dates associated with it: its medieval construction and a later restoration in the 19th century.
The architecture can also be described through individual details. The chapel has a bell gable with one bell. Inside are a masonry altar, a wooden altarpiece and figures of Saints Helena, Agatha and Anthony. The furnishings thus include both the altar’s design and depictions of the three saints.
Winemaking and Local Character
Traditional agriculture in Markovac particularly includes winemaking. Two wineries trace their histories to the area, but give different dates: Vina BERNOBIĆ describes the start of its winemaking history in Markovac as 1898; Poletti has been making wine there since 1842. The dates therefore tell two separate winemaking histories rather than a shared origin.
The wines offered by Vina BERNOBIĆ include traditional macerated Malvasia, Teran and Refošk. The selection may change. If you are planning a guided tasting at Poletti, check in advance whether it is currently offered and whether a reservation is required.
Cycling Routes and Views
The Istrian Wine Trail (156) is a cycling tour that passes through Markovac. Official cycling route 104, “On the Edges of Poreč,” also runs through the area. Check the route descriptions before setting off, as details may change. Both routes give cyclists a specific point of reference for Markovac; no walking or cycling time through the area is provided.
Markovac lies on a gentle rise at the end of the Kaštelir–Višnjan road. Its location offers views across much of northern Poreština as far as the sea. The landscape and views complement the area’s historical and winemaking themes, without requiring a dedicated viewpoint.
More Destinations in Općina Višnjan
The wider destination of Općina Višnjan includes other destinations in their own right. The old part of Višnjan lies on a hill and is characterized by closely packed stone houses and narrow lanes. A Baroque loggia stands on the main square of the historic old town. These local features differ from Markovac’s points of interest: its chapel, winemaking and cycling routes.
The hiking trails in Općina Višnjan also differ in length. The marked Owl Trail is 7.7 kilometres long, is suitable for family hikes and starts in a small pine grove near the Višnjan cemetery. It leads to the purpose-built Vena viewpoint, which offers views of olive groves, vineyards and the sea. The Venetian Lion Trail is 4.5 kilometres long and takes about 2.5 hours. It passes through historic Višnjan, from Antun Korlević Square, beneath the arch with the Venetian lion, to the old village of Barat and back. The stated duration applies to this trail; no walking time is given here for the Owl Trail.
The wider destination of Općina Višnjan is also home to Višnjan Observatory. Registered as a public observatory in 1992, it focuses scientifically on small bodies in the Solar System and their interactions with Earth. Group visits are available year-round by prior arrangement. The group programme includes an introductory talk on a scientific or astronomical topic and tours of the observatory, the telescope dome and the Stone Circle. Telescope observations outdoors take place when weather conditions are suitable.
