Municipality of Farkaševac: Woodland, Churches and Hillfort
Accommodation in Municipality of Farkaševac
The Municipality of Farkaševac lies in the far east of Zagreb County. The municipality is characterised by a predominantly flat landscape, mostly covered in forest. There are also waterways in the west and cultural and historical sites in Kabal and Farkaševac. When choosing a destination for a hotel stay, you can compare the landscape, religious heritage and a medieval fortification.
Landscape and orientation
The Dunjara and Žabnica rivers and their tributaries are located in the western part of the municipality. This clearly locates the waterways, while the overall landscape is characterised by flat terrain and extensive forests. The Česma Forest Vegetation Special Reserve adds to this natural profile: it is located near Donji Markovac within the municipality and has been protected since 1982.
The main roads also help orient visitors around the municipality. County road Ž-3042 runs east to west, while county road Ž-2231 runs north to south. Both are among the most important roads in Farkaševac. Their directions are clearly distinct and help establish the municipality’s geographical layout.
Churches and historic sites
In Kabal stands the Orthodox filial church of sv. Oca Nikolaja, built in 1760. Today, the icons are arranged in three main rows on a simply masonry-rendered surface; almost all are painted in oil on wood. The iconostasis of this church is listed as a preventively protected cultural asset. The arrangement of the rows and the painting technique give Kabal’s religious heritage a tangible, artistic and craft-based dimension.
Also in the centre of Kabal, one of the chapels is dedicated to Christ the King. Another landmark place of worship is the church of Rastanka sv. Apostola in Farkaševac, which shapes the village’s appearance. Together with the Orthodox filial church and the chapel, these sites form distinct religious points of reference in the municipality.
Another historical trace is Farkaševa gradina in Farkaševac: a medieval, circular hillfort with two defensive ditches that were once connected to a stream. Its fortification differs markedly from the church buildings. The municipality is thus home to examples of religious art and architecture as well as a site characterised by its rampart and ditches.
When planning your trip, you can weigh these themes against one another: the flat, wooded landscape and the protected forest area offer a connection with nature; Kabal and Farkaševac provide specific religious and historical points of interest. The main features are located in different named places, so Farkaševac cannot be reduced to a single sight or theme.
Other points of interest in Zagreb County
The wider destination of Zagreb County has other themes associated with their respective locations. The “Stopama svetog Martina” cycling route runs from the centre of Dugo Selo to the excursion destination of Martin Breg. In Ivanić-Grad, there are three developed cycling routes with different levels of difficulty: the easier orange route and the more challenging yellow and blue routes. Check the current route conditions before setting off.
Culture and regional specialities also add to the picture of Zagreb County. In Zaprešić, the Museum of Matija Skurjeni is housed in a former granary and displays works by the naïve painter Matija Skurjeni. Samobor’s specialities include Muštarda and Bermet, made according to old recipes, as well as Samoborske kremšnite. These examples broaden the regional context without replacing the themes of the Municipality of Farkaševac.
