Općina Pokupsko: The Kupa and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Općina Pokupsko
The Kupa is the most important watercourse in Općina Pokupsko and runs along the southern edge of the area. Between elevated hilly areas, it forms pronounced meanders. The river is therefore a distinctive landscape feature; protected religious buildings and archaeological traces add cultural and historical themes to the picture. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip, you can first consider whether the Kupa or the history of the buildings will shape your stay more.
The Kupa, a river trip, and route ideas
The Kupski plov 2026 was scheduled for August 5. The planned river trip was to run from the bathing area in Lijevi Štefanki to the main beach at ŠRC Stari Grad in Pokupsko. This clearly identifies the event’s starting and finishing points. If you would like to plan your trip around a later edition, check its date and arrangements in advance.
An earlier municipal development strategy proposed a roughly 20-kilometer thematic, multi-purpose trail along the Kupa, intended for walking, cycling, and horseback riding. This proposal should be distinguished from the specifically scheduled event. If you would like to include the trail concept in your trip planning, check the current route and conditions first.
Baroque architecture in Pokupsko
The Church of the Assumption of Mary in Pokupsko was built between 1736 and 1739 and is protected as cultural heritage under registration number Z-1723. It is a prominent four-leaf Baroque church and is considered the first of its kind in Croatia and Styria. A cinktor with four corner towers surrounds the building. Its period of construction, floor plan, and enclosure together define the church’s architectural character.
Chapels and archaeological traces
Other protected cultural sites include the Chapel of the Holy Trinity in Gladovec Pokupski, the Chapel of St. John the Baptist in Lukinić Brdo, the Chapel of St. Peter and Paul in Cerje Pokupsko, and the Church of St. George in Lijevi Štefanki. The three chapels and the church add other named religious buildings to the major Baroque church.
Auguštanovec is associated with an archaeological site of a medieval wooden castle and a Roman bridge site. Finds of ancient pottery and bricks have also been discovered near Saldum in Auguštanovec. Thus, alongside the architectural history of the 18th century, there are also medieval, Roman, and ancient traces. These different themes give culture enthusiasts several perspectives on the area’s history across different periods.
Dishes from a community project
A school and community project in Pokupsko prepared homemade wide noodles with poppy seeds and walnuts in 2024. Makovnjača, orahnjače, and the cake medena Kata were also prepared as part of the project. Five workshops were also planned to make turkey with mlinci and savory filled kiflice. The dishes belong to the context of the 2024 project and are not a permanent visitor offering. For travelers interested in local cuisine, the names give a concrete idea of the dishes featured in this initiative.
