Grad Samobor: Nature, Mining and Culinary Delights
Accommodation in Grad Samobor
Grad Samobor can be explored from many different perspectives: nature trails and cycling routes, mining history, natural monuments, historic buildings and local specialties. If you are planning a hotel stay, these themes can shape your daily itinerary, depending on whether you are most interested in nature, culture or culinary traditions.
Nature Trails and Cycling Routes
The Poučna staza Otruševec is two kilometers long and passes nine different stations. At an easy walking pace, the hike takes about an hour and a half. Its history also makes the nature trail noteworthy: it was the first of its kind in Croatia, opened in 1990 and was renovated in 2018. The approximate walking time is based on an easy pace and provides a useful guide for planning your day.
Those who prefer to travel by bicycle can choose from seven routes that start and finish at Trg kralja Tomislava. Together, they cover more than 150 kilometers through the most scenic areas of Samobor. The distance refers to the combined length of all seven routes, not to a single route. Their shared starting and finishing point provides a clear reference for the route network.
Mining History and Nature
Above Rude lies Rudnik svete Barbare, one of Europe's oldest copper and iron mines. Visitors can explore several centuries-old underground tunnels, 350 meters long, on a guided tour led by an expert. For a different perspective on mining and nature, a 1.5-kilometer nature trail leads from Rude Elementary School to Manja Vas. It combines mining and botanical themes.
Grgosova špilja lies at the entrance to Otruševec. The cave is about 30 meters long and 19 meters deep, rich in stalactites and stalagmites, and divided into two chambers. Because of its cave formations, it is designated as a protected geomorphological natural monument. Its dimensions and two-chamber layout are distinctive features of its natural form.
Ruins and Culture
Stari grad Samobor is a ruin built by the Czech king Otokar in 1268. Please note an important restriction when visiting: entry to the ruins is solely at your own risk. Stari grad Okić offers a different historical perspective. The old fortress is considered a rare example of preserved Romanesque architecture in continental Croatia. Its ruins stand at an altitude of 499 meters and offer views of Posavina, Pokuplje, Zagreb, Medvednica and Plešivica.
The Samoborski muzej also brings together culture and local history. It is housed in a manor house associated with Ferdo Livadić, where it organizes exhibitions as well as musical and educational programs. These varied programs give culture its own place in the destination alongside its historic buildings.
Regional Specialties
Rudarska greblica is a thin, savory pie made from baked dough rolled out by hand and filled with fresh cow's cheese. Its tradition is historically linked to the miners of Rude. The product has an EU-protected geographical designation; the production area includes Rude and the surrounding villages in Zagreb County.
Samoborski bermet is also associated with Samobor, where it has been known for centuries. It is made with red wine and selected fruits and herbs. Another Samobor specialty is Samoborska kremšnita: at Slastičarnica U prolazu, it is still prepared according to the traditional recipe of its founder, Đuro Lukačić.
Planning Your Trip
At Medsave, a ferry carries day-trippers, cyclists and motorists from one bank to the other for a nominal fee. It is the fastest way to travel between Samobor and Zaprešić. Check the current timetable before setting out.
