Municipality of Kloštar Ivanić: Sacred History and Cycling Route

The Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Kloštar Ivanić is regarded as the most important monument of sacred architecture and history in the area. The town’s ecclesiastical heritage also includes the unified architectural complex of the Franciscan monastery and the Church of St John the Baptist. Its 69-metre-high tower also has a special surveying history: in 1817, it was selected as the starting point for the cadastral survey of Croatia and Slavonia.

The Book of Miracles of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Ivanić is kept in the parish archive of the Franciscan Church of St John the Baptist. Its entries cover the period from 1757 to 1782. Another historical trace is the Franciscan pharmacy: it was already in existence in 1670 and was granted public institution status in 1742, serving the healthcare needs of the population. It is one of the oldest pharmacies in this part of Croatia. These dates tell the story of its role at the time; they are a different kind of historical record from the entries in the parish archive.

A historic village well in the centre is also among the rare architectural monuments of its kind in northern Croatia. It is believed to have been built to meet the needs of the Military Frontier. The 29 km Glogovnica cycling route passes through Kloštar Ivanić and continues to the Glogovnica River. It connects the town with vineyards, settlements, orchards and Čret Forest. This main road is 3 km long and carries considerably more traffic. Caution is required when cycling there. The horses are kept on more than 220 hectares of communal pastureland.
