Discover Radnevo through its different facets: archaeological heritage, visual arts, local cultural history and natural areas. These themes lead from institutions and monuments in Radnevo to places such as Kolarovo and protected landscapes in the municipality and the surrounding area.

Archaeological Heritage and History

The “Maritsa-Iztok” Archaeological Museum in Radnevo presents the municipality’s archaeological heritage. This includes 92 settlements, 5 settlement mounds, 114 burial mounds and 4 fortresses. Together with the museum, the “Nov zhivot za minaloto” Archaeological Park in Radnevo provides a foundation for developing cultural and historical tourism in the municipality. Both names point to a focus that extends beyond individual monuments to encompass the region’s archaeological heritage.

A notable monument in the municipality is the 32-metre-high monument to Saint Ivan of Rila, erected in 2007. Another historical connection is the birthplace of Bulgarian poet and publicist Geo Milev, in the centre of Radnevo. He was born on 15 January 1895 in what was then Radnemahle, today’s Radnevo. The monument and the birthplace offer different points of emphasis: one on a religious figure, the other on the town’s literary history.

Art and Cultural Events

The Radnevo Municipal Art Gallery has more than 140 square metres of exhibition space. This includes a hall for the permanent exhibition, a hall for solo exhibitions, two storage rooms and a courtyard for small-scale outdoor sculptures. Its annual programme includes 12 to 15 exhibitions, including presentations from the collections of major Bulgarian galleries and solo exhibitions. The gallery thus brings together a range of exhibition formats for art enthusiasts.

During the May Cultural Days, the gallery holds the annual “Svetlina, zemiya, hora” plein-air event for painting and sculpture. The cultural programme of Radnevo Municipality also includes the International Folklore Festival of Instrumental and Dance Groups and the “Trakiyski slavey – s pesnite na Dinka Ruseva” competition. These events complement the museum and gallery offerings with music, dance and artistic practice.

A monument in Kolarovo commemorates Pop Mincho Kanchev Stoyanov. He was a Bulgarian revolutionary, an associate of Vasil Levski, a teacher and priest, the author of the book “Vidritsa” and an activist in the national liberation movement. The Pop Mincho Kanchev Museum is located in Kolarovo’s cultural centre. The monument and museum offer two different ways to connect with the same local figure.

Natural Areas and Recreation

The municipality’s protected areas are classified under different categories. The Ovcharitsa Reservoir is listed in the Natura network of Radnevo Municipality as a bird protection area under code BG0002023. The “Buzduganovska Koria” protected landscape is the only protected area designated under Bulgaria’s Protected Areas Act within Radnevo Municipality. The Sazliyka River is listed within the municipality as a Natura 2000 protected area under the Habitats Directive, code BG0000425. Before visiting the area around Ovcharitsa Reservoir, check the applicable management conditions.

The area around Radnevo offers opportunities for recreation and the development of fishing tourism. This adds a connection with nature to the archaeological and cultural themes, without conflating the protected areas with the surrounding area.

Getting There and Choosing a Location

The E-85 trunk road crosses Radnevo Municipality and connects Ruse and Kapitan Andreevo along its route, as well as Romania with Turkey and Greece. For your specific journey, take current road and traffic conditions into account. A north–south railway line connects Nova Zagora, Radnevo, Galabovo and Simeonovgrad; freight trains operate on it.

When choosing a hotel, it helps to decide what you want to focus on during your stay. Archaeology, the gallery and Geo Milev’s birthplace point to places in Radnevo; the museum and monument to Pop Mincho Kanchev are in Kolarovo. If you also plan to visit natural areas or enjoy recreational activities, compare hotel locations with the specific places that matter to your trip.
