The municipality of Gurkovo is located in central Bulgaria, in Stara Zagora Province, on the eastern edge of the Rose Valley and at the southern end of the Republic Pass, also known as Hainboaz. The Lazova and Radova rivers rise in the Balkan Mountains, flow through Gurkovo and empty into the Tundzha. The Zhrebchevo Reservoir lies on the southern edge of the municipality. The river courses, pass and expanse of water provide different geographical points of reference. Visitors wishing to combine nature and culture will also find hiking trails and historic sites in the municipality.

Hiking the Lyava Reka–Predela Trail

The Lyava Reka–Predela eco-trail is 15 kilometres long, with a stated duration of eight hours. This time estimate provides a concrete guide for planning your day: the route can be treated as a focus in its own right. It connects with the international Kom–Emine hiking trail and is therefore part of a broader hiking network. Along the trail are three rest shelters with barbecue facilities and a fountain with cold drinking water. When choosing the route, you can take the stated duration and the named rest points into account together in your personal schedule.

A stay in the Lazovo recreation area

The Lazovo recreation area on the Lazova River in Gurkovo offers a different kind of stay. Its facilities include a bridge, a gazebo for 20 to 30 people, tables, a barbecue area, a children’s playground, swings and a sandbox. There is also a large meadow designated for camping, sports and cycling. This brings together places to spend time with others, play facilities and open space for activities. The stated capacity of the gazebo gives groups a concrete point of reference; the meadow is intended for tents, exercise and cycling. Check the condition of the facilities before your visit.

Church, museum and Roman finds

The Church of Sveti Dimitar in Gurkovo is a cultural monument built in 1860. The Donkey Museum complements this historical connection with regional everyday and collection history. Its collection features household items from the region as well as objects related to keeping and using donkeys, including carts, saddles, bags, reins, ploughs and threshing equipment. An archaeological section covers finds from around Gurkovo dating from the Thracian, Roman, Slavic, Proto-Bulgarian and medieval periods. Everyday objects from the region are thus presented alongside archaeological evidence from different eras.

Near the village of Konare, a Roman villa rustica dating from the 2nd to 4th centuries was excavated in 2017. The building elements discovered include a pool, a steam bath with underfloor heating, three changing rooms and a hot-air heating system supplied by external fire pits. The villa adds specific Roman architectural forms to the municipality’s historical themes. History enthusiasts therefore have a range of points of interest: a cultural monument in the town, the museum collection and archaeological finds near Konare.
