Galabovo is located in southeastern Stara Zagora Province, Bulgaria. The city of Galabovo lies on both banks of the Sazliyka. This means views of the area extend from the river landscape to historical sites and the Rozov-Kladanets Reservoir.

Archaeological Traces in the Municipality

The Hisarlaka settlement mound, with remains of a Chalcolithic settlement, is located in the courtyard of Brikel. The finds point to intensive craft activity and trade relations with ancient Greece and the Middle East. The site therefore connects local settlement history with the far-reaching contacts of that period.

The municipality’s archaeological record also includes dozens of Thracian burial mounds, settlement remains, and graves. Finds include pottery, women’s jewelry, and fragments of roof tiles. Near Glavan, the remains of the Roman fortress of Balzena lie in the surrounding countryside. In the Erkesene area near the city of Galabovo are part of Khan Tervel’s border ditch and the Appian Roman road. These historic sites offer different points of interest, from settlement finds and graves to remains of fortifications and roads.

Balzena Eco Trail: Route and Water

The Balzena Eco Trail near Glavan is a loop route that starts and ends at Zaara Estate. The path climbs to Gradishte Peak at 535 meters, then descends to 420 meters and follows a forest route on the way back. There are no wells along the route. Be sure to bring enough water, especially in warm weather. Trail conditions and access regulations may change; check the current conditions before setting out.

Water Landscape and Birdlife

The Rozov-Kladanets complex is next to the city of Galabovo. Its reservoir is built on the Sokolitsa River and is supplied by water intakes from the Sokolitsa and the Sazliyka. The reservoir was created between 1957 and 1960 with two earth dams, forming a man-made landscape dating from the mid-20th century.

The National Wetlands Plan for 2013–2022 identifies the Rozov Kladanets wetland and its surrounding areas as an important resting place for waterbirds during migration and in winter. The plan also lists 142 recorded bird species in the area. Taking a boat onto the reservoir before sunrise can disturb birds resting there. If you plan to go out on the water, bear this in mind when choosing the time.

Getting Around and Local Culture

Road III-5504 runs through MĹdrets, Iskritsa, Mednikarovo, and Obrouchishte, connecting roads II-55 and III-554 along a 15.7-kilometer stretch. If your journey takes you along this route, check the current road conditions in advance.

Local cultural resources include the House of Culture, the youth center, event and sports parks, museums, a gallery, archaeological sites, monuments, libraries, and community centers. Traditional festivals are also part of the local culture. Alongside its archaeological and natural attractions, Galabovo therefore offers other points of interest to consider when planning a stay.
