Anton lies in the southern foothills of the Balkan Mountains. Protected nature, hikes to mountain huts and local culture shape the municipality. The hike to Planinski izvori Hut has a specific estimated duration; other hiking routes are described through their waypoints. The church, chapel, memorial sites and annual traditions add to the destination’s character.

Landscape and Surroundings

The municipality includes part of Central Balkan National Park; the Vartopa protected area lies entirely within the municipality of Anton. Nearby, Peperudata Waterfall is located between Anton and Klisura on the Podbalkan road. It is in Central Balkan National Park and is just under 20 metres high. Parking is available on both sides of the road. Check local conditions if you plan to stop there. Spring water flows from a source in Anton’s central square.

Hikes Around Anton

Anton is one of the starting points for the hike to Planinski izvori Hut on the Balkan Mountain ridge in the Gyoldzhuka area. The walk from Anton’s municipal centre to the hut is listed as taking three and a half hours; the duration may vary depending on trail conditions. The hike follows a marked trail. Check conditions on the ground before setting out.

Other routes offer different ways to access the mountains. The Central Balkan National Park management plan for 2016–2025 listed a summer route from Ribaritsa via Benkovski Hut and Zanogata to Anton. Another hiking route connects Divchovoto with Anton via Elprom, Momina Polyana and Planinski Izvori huts. The annual traditional hike along the mountain ridge is a separate event; check locally for specific dates before travelling.

Culture, Traditions and Memorial Sites

The Church of Sveti Prorok Iliya in Anton is listed as a cultural monument of artistic value. The iconostasis doors and individual icons are particularly noteworthy. St George’s Chapel stands above the town. It was consecrated in 2007 on the site of a small monastery. At the edge of town, on the road towards Karlovo, a memorial fountain stands beside international road E871 in honour of Todor Patakov, a Bulgarian border guard from Anton who died in service. A local legend links Jemina Rock in the nearby area to a woman’s leap from a high cliff.

The feast day of Sveti Iliya is also an annual traditional cultural event in Anton. For 4–6 May 2025, the cultural calendar scheduled the municipal celebration, with concerts by amateur ensembles, as well as the regional dance gathering “Nadigravane kray izvora”. Dance groups from the region and across the country were planned to take part. These dates describe the 2025 programme; check current local announcements when planning your trip.

The 2021–2027 Municipal Development Plan describes the “Hristo Botev-1925” cultural centre as having a library, information and telecommunications technology, and internet access. If you plan to visit, check the current opening hours in advance.
