Gorna Malina: Elevations, Hiking Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Gorna Malina
The municipality of Gorna Malina ranges from 584 m in the area of Dolna Malina to 1,655 m at Mount Zvezdets (Shindarnika) in the area of Stragel. These two elevation points show how much altitude varies within the municipality. The Makotsevska flows through the municipality; it is a right-bank tributary of the Lesnovska in the Iskar River basin. The BG0001043 “Etropole–Bailovo” protected area also includes parts of the municipality. Together, the elevation points, river and protected area provide a clear geographical orientation for a trip to Gorna Malina.
Landscape and Hiking
A nature trail leads from Arabakonak Pass to the source of the Bebresh: the eco-educational trail in the northern part of the municipality. It runs through the area of Stragel in the western Stara Planina and is 8,915 metres long, or just under nine kilometres. Its starting point, destination and location clearly set the route within the landscape.
The traditional annual hike “In the Footsteps of Elin Pelin” leads from the centre of Bailovo to the Manastir Caves. It is considered easy, is 10.5 kilometres long and takes about 3.5 hours. The two routes differ in their destinations and lengths: the eco-educational trail leads to the source of the Bebresh, while the hike goes to the caves. If you would like to take part in the annual hike, check that year’s dates and arrangements.
Culture, Literature and History
The preserved house of Elin Pelin in Bailovo was converted into a museum in 1977, on the occasion of the writer’s 100th birthday. The Elin Pelin Memorial House houses the exhibition “The Life and Work of Elin Pelin”. The house and exhibition give the literary connection a specific location and a clearly defined subject.
Another historical landmark is the Russian Victory Monument “Arabakonak”, a historical monument of national importance in the municipality of Gorna Malina. The Manastir Caves are considered a rock sanctuary and an ancient astronomical observatory. The rock drawings and bas-reliefs are attributed to a period more than 7,000 years ago. The hike’s destination from Bailovo thus connects with another site of cultural and historical interest described here.
The regional art festival “Malinale” in Gorna Malina presents sculpture, painting, graphics, ceramics, posters, photography and textiles. Its scope ranges from sculptural and graphic works to photography and textile art. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for your intended travel period.
Leisure at Windmills Hydropark
Windmills Hydropark is located at the entrance to the village of Gorna Malina. It has six outdoor pools, including two for children, as well as a lake for sport fishing. The two facilities cater to different leisure interests; before visiting, it is advisable to confirm the current status of the pools and lake. As a geographical reference point, the hydropark is 20 kilometres from Sofia. The road distance may differ.
Choose a Hotel Location to Suit Your Itinerary
When looking for a hotel, it helps to first organise your planned destinations. Bailovo is the reference point for the Elin Pelin Memorial House and the start of the annual hike; the hydropark is at the entrance to the village of Gorna Malina, and the eco-educational trail runs through the area of Stragel. This way, you can choose a location based on your actual travel plans and the places you want to include.
