Churches and Archaeological History
The Church of St Petka in Bogyo was built in 1852. Its frescoes were painted by artists from the Debar and Samokov schools. The church is classified as a second-group cultural monument of exceptional artistic value. The site therefore combines a specific construction date with a distinctive art-historical classification.
The Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius, the largest church in the municipality, stands in Kostinbrod. Its foundation stone was laid in 1905, and it was consecrated on 24 May 1907. These two dates distinguish the start of the church’s construction from its later consecration. At Shiyakovo Monastery, Vasil Levski helped establish the Secret Revolutionary Committee in Kostinbrod in 1871. The monastery also has a recreation area.
The archaeological sites also tell of different eras. The Late Roman residence of Skretiska is associated with Constantine I. A road station of the same name was the first station west of Serdica on the ancient trans-Balkan diagonal route. The archaeological site includes the Late Antique residence of Skretiska, early Byzantine Kratiscara and the Rotunda. It is classified as archaeological immovable cultural heritage of national importance and covers more than 20,000 m². In the area of the village of Petarch, locals call the remains of ancient buildings the Petarch Monastery.
The municipality of Kostinbrod belongs to the Shopi ethnographic region. This cultural classification adds another perspective on the region alongside its specific churches and historical sites.
