Elin Pelin Municipality lies in the eastern part of the Sofia Field. Its landscape is framed by the northern slopes of the Stara Planina and the slopes of the Sredna Gora to the south and southeast. The municipality encompasses uplands, semi-mountainous terrain and mountainous areas. At 1,687 metres, Murgash is the municipality’s highest point. This range shapes the character of a destination where nature and culture sit side by side.

Landscape and Orientation

Woodland extends across the Ihtiman-Sredna Gora and the western part of the Stara Planina. It also includes parts of the lands of Lesnovo, Novi Han and other places. In the higher woodland areas, the average elevation is 700 to 1,000 metres. Trees found there include sessile oak, downy oak, Turkey oak, hornbeam and beech, as well as black pine, Scots pine and Douglas fir. The range of elevations and tree species gives the landscape a different character from the open uplands.

The Hemus and Trakia motorways and Route 6, the Sub-Balkan Road, pass through the municipality. The Sofia–Burgas railway line and the trans-European Kalotina–Sofia–Plovdiv–Svilengrad route also run through the municipality. For passenger travel, the municipality provides route information and links to timetables. Check timetables and fares before travelling, as they may change.

Shopi Culture and Regional History

Local Shopi culture includes a distinctive dialect, traditional white clothing, folk dances, songs and humour. The area is considered one of the best-preserved centres of Shopi ethnocultural tradition. Elin Pelin has hosted the recurring Shopski Festival since 1970, around the Feast of the Holy Spirit; dates and programmes vary. The 2025 programme included the culinary exhibition “Gozbite na Shopa”, where residents and visitors could sample traditional dishes.

The archaeological traces also reach far back: the ancient Trajan’s Road passes through the municipality, and an important Roman road station called Buragara or Bugaraka was located near Lesnovo. Southwest of Elin Pelin are the remains of a 4th-century road tower, with an associated settlement and a later Slavic settlement. Near Novi Han are poorly preserved ruins of a Thracian settlement with a defensive rampart; Roman settlement remains lie to the west. Archaeological remains may be difficult to access or interpret on site.

The municipality has around 85 cultural monuments. The collection at the Elin Pelin 1896 community cultural centre features a reconstructed interior of a Shopi house, a loom, traditional costumes and objects used for food preparation. The archaeological exhibition includes, among other items, parts of a Thracian chariot, a plinth with a Greek inscription and a Roman brick. Check the collection’s status and visiting arrangements before your visit. Other historical landmarks include the Church of St Nicholas in Stolnik, dating from the Second Bulgarian Empire; the area’s oldest cell school, in Doganovo, dating from 1835; and a surviving wall of a 17th-century Ottoman caravanserai in Novi Han.

Reservoirs, Thermal Springs and Activities

Notable bodies of water include the Ognyanovo Reservoir, with a stated volume of 32 million cubic metres, and the Taratorskoto Micro-Reservoir above Gabra, with around five million cubic metres. Volumes may vary with water levels. Ognyanovo Reservoir is considered suitable for water sports, including motorised water sports. Before taking part, check the specific facilities, rules and operating conditions. The municipality also has three geothermal springs: the spring at Ravno Pole is of national importance, Toplika is in Eleshnitsa, and another borehole is near Elin Pelin.

In Ravno Pole, the Sveta Sofia Golf Club and SPA offers another type of activity. The 18-hole course is considered Bulgaria’s first golf course to receive an official rating from the European Golf Association; the club also has a golf academy with practice and analysis facilities. The spa facilities include Finnish and herbal saunas, a steam room, relaxation areas, fitness facilities, and indoor and outdoor mineral-water pools. Facilities and access conditions may change; check before your visit.
