Chavdar: Early History, Folklore and Nature
Accommodation in Chavdar
Chavdar brings together a landscape between mountain ranges, traces of early settlement and vibrant cultural traditions. The village lies between Stara Planina and Sŭshtinska Sredna Gora; the Topolnitsa River runs between these areas. Remains of an Early Neolithic settlement that existed more than 7,000 years ago have been found along the river. They formed the basis for Topolnitsa Archaeological Park.
Discover the Early History
Key stops in the archaeological park include an exhibition building, reconstructed Early Neolithic houses and workshops. The workshops focus on leatherworking, stone tools and pottery. In this way, living spaces, crafts and archaeological finds are presented side by side. The park also offers overnight stays in the reconstructed houses; as arrangements may change, check the current details in advance.
The Chavdar Folklore Center also offers an interactive experience of cultural heritage. It explores local material and intangible traditions, knowledge and skills. Video installations, as well as table, computer and mechanical games, bring everyday life in times past to life. In a bread-making activity, visitors use an authentic hand mill to make flour. This combines a practical activity with an insight into traditional craftsmanship.
Churches, Festivals and Local Customs
The Church of St. Archangel Michael in Chavdar was built in 1883. Its wood carvings were made by craftspeople from Samokov; the iconostasis was created by master Filip Zograf from Koprivshtitsa. At the entrance to the village stands the St. George Chapel, built in 1998 near an older church of the same name. Every year on May 6, the chapel’s festival draws visitors and locals. Covered shelters with benches, a stage and a food-preparation area are part of the visitor facilities there; the exact festival arrangements may vary.
Since 2008, the folk festival “Let’s Sing the Songs of Sredna Gora Together” has been held at the St. Petka site. Dance and singing groups from across Bulgaria come together for the event; check the dates before your trip. Chavdar’s annual cultural traditions also include a wedding ritual based on an old custom, a Kukeri festival, and folk music and dance festivals. The program may vary from year to year. During dry summers, Vaidudula is performed, a traditional prayer for rain. Chavdar also hosts the National Festival of Old Urban Songs and Hits “Love Comes from Heaven”; check current dates separately.
