Pirdop: Heritage, Landscapes and Traditions
Accommodation in Pirdop
Pirdop is defined by its location in the Zlatishko-Pirdop Basin: the municipality occupies its eastern part. The Balkan Mountains border the basin to the north and Sredna Gora to the south; the Koznitsa and Galabets mountain passes lie to the west and east. The municipal territory is part of the Natura 2000 protected areas BG0001389 “Sredna Gora” under the Habitats Directive 92/43/EEC and BG0002054 “Sredna Gora” under the Birds Directive 79/409/EEC. The I-6 Sofia–Burgas road is important for getting around; it is the municipality’s main transport route.
Churches, a Basilica and Places of Remembrance
The ruins of the early Christian fortified Elenska Basilica in Pirdop Municipality date from the late 5th or the first half of the 6th century and are considered a monument of national importance. During the Second Bulgarian Empire, the church was an active literary centre. Associated with it is the Pirdop Apostle, a Middle Bulgarian monument from the beginning of the 13th century. According to accounts, it was found in a niche in the church in the 19th century.
The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin, built in 1819, stands in Pirdop. It is considered the oldest monument of the Bulgarian National Revival period in the area. Its carved walnut iconostasis was made by masters of the Debar woodcarving school and is one of the four works by this school that have survived to this day. The Lukanova House Museum is a monument of local architectural significance, built in 1870–1872.
The Todor Genchov Vlaykov Memorial School is considered Bulgaria’s only memorial school. It commemorates residents of Pirdop who died for their country in the wars of 1912–1913 and 1915–1918. Construction of the memorial school began on 11 March 1932. In Dushantsi, the Kufarita Bridge tells another story from the past: this architectural and historical monument dates from the period of Ottoman rule and was built on the foundations of a Roman-era bridge.
Trails and Scenery around Dushantsi Reservoir
There are seven waterfalls in the upper reaches of the Bobyovitsa River. A hiking trail from Pirdop through the Bobyovitsa area to Pavel Deliradev Hut takes approximately five hours. Pirdop is also a starting point for hiking routes to Paskal Hut. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
Hikes from Dushantsi Reservoir lead to Koprivshtitsa railway station, Klimash Peak and Koprivshtitsa; Klimash is listed at an elevation of 1,342 metres. In summer, the reservoir’s surroundings, with their extensive meadows, are used for recreation. In July and August, small tent camps of tourists from Sofia and nearby settlements can occasionally be seen there. A free campsite is set up on the southern shores; check its current availability for your travel dates. The reservoir also serves as a training base for the Bulgarian national canoeing team.
Festivals Throughout the Year
Every New Year’s Day, Pirdop Municipality and the local Rodolyubie Club hold the “Peene na Prastenite” custom in Skalata Square. Women and girls in traditional dress sing ceremonial songs around a festively decorated dogwood branch. Children and girls place rings and other objects in a copper vessel filled with water and wheat grains. The annual winter sports and tourism festival in the Borova Gora area follows on the last Saturday in February. The programme includes horse races for young people, tug-of-war and other competitions for children.
The Vlaykovi Days May cultural festival takes place every year during the second and third weeks of May. Traditionally, it concludes on 24 May with a festive concert in front of the Napredak Cultural Centre. The Christian Ilinden festival is held in the Elensko area among the ruins of the basilica and organised by the church council of the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin. No specific annual date is given. Pirdop’s summer festival, a folk festival held at Elenska Basilica under the auspices of the municipality, takes place in Elensko. Following a 2017 municipal council decision, it is held on the first Saturday after 20 July.
Dushantsi also has its own occasion, the Petrovden folk festival: it is usually held on the first Saturday after the Christian feast of Saints Peter and Paul, in the meadow above the reservoir. The programme includes a concert and a blessed sacrificial meal; traditionally, guests come from all over the country. If you are planning your trip around a festival, check the specific dates for the year in question.
