Yakoruda: Mountain Lakes, Waterfalls and Culture
Accommodation in Yakoruda
A railway station at 1,267.4 metres above sea level marks a special point of reference: Avramovo railway station in Yakoruda Municipality is the highest railway station on the Balkan Peninsula. For road navigation, there is another point of reference: Route II-84 between Razlog and Velingrad runs for 29 kilometres through the municipality and passes through the town of Yakoruda. When planning your trip, keep in mind the difference between the station in Avramovo and the road route through Yakoruda. Road conditions can change; check them before setting out.
Mountain Landscapes and Natural Features
Yakoruda Municipality includes parts of the Rila Mountains, the Western Rhodopes and the Mesta Valley. The section of Rila National Park within the municipality includes forests, high-altitude lakes and mountain meadows. The Yakoruda Lakes form a distinct group: three glacial lakes in the eastern part of the Rila Mountains. In this way, the diverse landscape within the national park and a clearly defined group of lakes offer different perspectives on the region.
Protected natural areas also help shape the region. The protected area of Bəlatsite safeguards centuries-old white pines. Chesnensko Usoe, also known as Yakoruda Waterfall, is 15 to 16 metres high. Another natural feature is in the Banite area: the thermal spring has a flow rate of 32 litres per second and a temperature of 42 °C. These details complement the mountain and forest landscapes with a specific hydrogeological feature.
Hiking and Cycling Around Treshtenik
The Treshtenik resort area lies 14 kilometres north of Yakoruda and is a starting point for numerous hiking routes, including trails to the Granchar and Zavrachitsa mountain huts. Treshtenik is therefore a clearly identified starting point for planning a hike, while the two huts provide specific destinations along the routes. The Treshtenik–Semkovo mountain-bike route starts at the Treshtenik resort complex above Yakoruda.
The Treshtenik–Mochura route combines the ride with a stop at the Banenska: the route leads to a small lake beside a rest area with benches and tables. A route description dated 13 August 2024 describes this mountain-bike route as suitable for beginners and children. As trail conditions and the state of rest areas can change, check the current situation before your trip.
The route to Nehtenski Waterfall can also be described geographically. The route description goes from Yakoruda along the Byala Mesta River to the waterfall on the Banenska and back. The trail is suitable only for walking. The description dates from August 2024; check current trail conditions before setting out. This clearly distinguishes the hike from the mountain-bike routes mentioned above.
Church, Traditions and Local Cultural Life
On the outskirts of Yakoruda is the early Christian Djerzhdevden Church, also known as Gergyovden Church. The “Topene na Belezi” ritual is also part of local cultural life. A report dated 6 May 2026 notes that Christians and Muslims have celebrated it together for eleven consecutive years and that the local community revived it. If you would like to plan your trip around this ritual, check the dates of a future edition.
A chitalishte in Yakoruda has a women’s vocal group for folk and old urban songs, a men’s folklore group, and children’s groups for folklore, modern and folk dances. The programme therefore ranges from singing to dance and includes groups for adults and children. These cultural activities complement the natural attractions with a glimpse of community traditions, without requiring a visit to a particular event.
When choosing a hotel, you can first consider what you would like your stay to focus on: the mountain and lake scenery, trails starting from Treshtenik, a hike to Nehtenski Waterfall, or Yakoruda’s cultural sites and traditions. Then check the address of the specific hotel against your planned destinations and routes.
