When planning a stay in Yakoruda, three distinct themes stand side by side: the Rhodope narrow-gauge railway, trails in the municipality, and the cultural history of the town centre. To make your decision, it is worth distinguishing between destinations and trail conditions: alongside marked mountain trails, there is a long loop to Nehtenski Waterfall with a more challenging final section.

Reaching Yakoruda by the Rhodope Narrow-Gauge Railway

The Rhodope narrow-gauge railway offers year-round tourist journeys via Septemvri, Velingrad, Yakoruda, Razlog, Bansko and Dobrinishte. It runs along the highest railway line in the Balkans. If you plan to include the train journey in your trip, check the timetable and fares before departure; both can change.

Hiking Trails and Mountain Bike Routes

Yakoruda is a starting point for hikes to the Treshenik resort in the Rila Mountains, above the town. From Treshenik, marked trails lead to Grunchar Hut, the Yakoruda Lakes and Mount Musala. A municipal report from 2024 also mentions several mountain bike routes that the municipality laid out and marked in its area together with MTB-BG. Check the current route and markings before setting out, as route infrastructure and trail conditions can change.

For a walk to Kalyata Fortress, Yakoruda Mineral Bath is the nearest access point on the narrow-gauge railway. The fortress is visible from there, but the path to it is unmarked. Allow about 20 to 30 minutes for the walk. Along the way, there are views towards three mountains.

The Trail to Nehtenski Waterfall

The route described in 2024 starts at Yakoruda’s central square, initially heading towards Yundola, then continuing along the main road beside the river. The loop is listed as 23.5 kilometres round trip, taking two to four hours. Its technical difficulty and physical exertion are rated as low. The route is suitable only for walking; its distance breakdown comprises 9.0 kilometres of asphalt, 14.2 kilometres of unpaved roads and 0.3 kilometres of hiking trails to the waterfall.

At route kilometre 11.7, the path reaches a wooden bridge and signs for Nehtenski Waterfall. The final approach consists of two sections: a broad, easy path takes about one minute to reach a wooden platform. The next two to three minutes to the waterfall follow more difficult and dangerous terrain. Check current trail conditions before setting out and take this difference into account when planning.

Architecture, Collection and Local Traditions

Houses from the National Revival period are part of the townscape in central Yakoruda. They are built in the Razlog–Chepino architectural style. Religious buildings include the Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius, built in 1835, the Church of St George, and a mosque completed in 1952. A museum collection at the community centre contains more than 1,050 archaeological and ethnographic exhibits, as well as photographs, manuscripts and coins.

In Yakoruda, Christians and Muslims celebrate St George’s Day together; at the same time, the local community is reviving the old ritual “Topene na belezi.” A report dated 6 May 2026 described this revival as taking place for the eleventh consecutive year. If you want to travel for the festival, check the specific dates in advance.

Scenery and Orientation in Yakoruda Municipality

At municipal level, Yakoruda includes parts of the Rila Mountains and the Western Rhodope Mountains. The municipality includes a section of Rila National Park, with forests, high-altitude lakes and mountain meadows; views extend towards the Rhodope Mountains and Pirin. Avramovo railway station is also located in the municipality, at 1,267.4 metres above sea level; it is the highest railway station on the Balkan Peninsula. Road II-84 between Razlog and Velingrad runs for 29 kilometres through the municipality and passes through the town of Yakoruda.
