Discover Petrich: Forests, Waterfalls and Culture
Accommodation in Petrich
Nature and culture around Petrich range from the forests and waterfall trails of Belasitsa Nature Park to museums, cultural monuments and religious sites. You can tailor your stay to a wide range of interests.
Forests and trails in Belasitsa Nature Park
Within Petrich Municipality, Belasitsa Nature Park includes the town of Petrich and the villages of Gabrene, Skrat, Klyuch, Yavornitsa, Kamena, Samuilovo, Kolarovo, Belasitsa and Razhdak. Its total area is 117,324.318 decares. Beech, sessile oak and sweet chestnut forests predominate; Kongura Reserve protects well-preserved beech and chestnut stands.
The trail network includes routes to 14 waterfalls, the Belasitsa and Kongur mountain huts, and the peaks of Radomir and Kongur. There are also eight themed routes. In the wider Belasitsa region, at the meeting point of Bulgaria, North Macedonia and Greece, alpine meadows, waterfalls and viewpoints complement the landscape of beech and chestnut forests.
Waterfall routes and nature themes
The blue-marked route to Yavornishki Waterfall is 2.8 kilometres long and takes approximately one hour and 20 minutes. Information boards cover butterflies and flowers; the trail is suitable for walks with children and picnics. Check trail conditions locally before setting out.
The themed route “Belasitsa Butterflies and Flowers” leads from Yavornitsa to Yavornishki Waterfall and a viewpoint. Along the way, it focuses on local butterflies and flowering plants. The route information thus provides an approximate time as well as ideas for an excursion where nature is part of the journey.
Museums and cultural heritage
The Petrich History Museum presents archaeology, history and ethnography from prehistoric, ancient, medieval, Ottoman and National Revival periods, as well as the modern era. Its collection includes more than 15,000 objects. The span of periods makes the different eras of local history a theme for a museum visit.
Cultural heritage is also designated in the villages. Six houses in Yavornitsa are protected as monuments. The local community centre has folklore, singing and dance groups that take part in festivals and gatherings. In Belasitsa, five National Revival-era houses and the Church of St. Prophet Elijah, dating from 1897, are classified as cultural monuments.
The Churilovo Monastery of St. George lies on the southern slopes of the Ograzhden Mountains and preserves religious and educational heritage from the 19th century. Its origins are traditionally dated to 1848; possible roots in the 14th century remain a tradition or supposition.
Rupite and Samuil’s Fortress
Rupite is known for rare tree and animal species, some of which are included in Bulgaria’s Red Data Book. An ornithological station monitors migratory birds there. The Bulgarian St. Petka Temple was built under Vanga’s direction and has been listed among Bulgaria’s 100 National Tourist Sites since 2003. An exhibition hall displays photographs and items belonging to the prophetess.
The St. Petka complex also includes 12 rooms with 30 beds, a baptism hall and parking for cars and buses. Confirm the facilities before your visit. A visitor centre and a souvenir shop are available at Samuil’s Fortress. The fortress is accessible year-round by car and bus, including for people with disabilities. Check access and visitor facilities before travelling.

Orbelus Winery mainly produces blended wines and offers views over vineyards and the surrounding mountains. Its vineyards cover more than 272 decares in the lands of Kromidovo, Kapatovo and Marikostinovo. Before travelling there, check the current offerings and access arrangements.
In Dolene, more than 80,000 flowers form a colourful, fragrant garden. Its design and presentation may change over time. Kamena has hourly bus connections with Petrich and nearby foothill villages; check the timetable before travelling.
