The hyperthermal mineral water in Ognyanovo reaches 40 °C; Kovachevitsa offers a different focus, with an architectural reserve, ancient forests and distinctive natural formations. Garmen Municipality offers reasons to travel, where you can choose to focus on thermal waters, hiking or architectural heritage. Garmen Municipality encompasses parts of the Mesta Valley and the western slopes of the Dabrash section of the Western Rhodopes. When planning, it helps to start with a question: Which place and activity should define your stay? You can use your answer to guide your choice of hotel location.

Thermal Waters in Ognyanovo

Ognyanovo is a balneological centre in Garmen Municipality. Its mineral water is hyperthermal, with a temperature of 40 °C. The thermal water area includes seven natural springs and two additional boreholes. If mineral water is the main reason for your trip, Ognyanovo offers a clear reference point for your plans.

Hiking and Natural Attractions

The Kaninska eco-trail offers hiking routes lasting from two to ten hours. Its long circular route runs from Kovachevitsa via Skrebatno and Gorno Dryanovo and back to Kovachevitsa. Check local conditions before planning a hike. Another time estimate applies to Siniya Vir Waterfall: from Kovachevitsa, it can be reached by walking west for one hour. The waterfall forms a cascade in the valley of the Kanina River, with blue-green pools. For day planning, you can compare this one-hour walk with the eco-trail’s two- to ten-hour hiking options.

The Rizova Dupka karst gorge is ten to twelve metres deep. Vertical wooden ladders lead to a corridor that is 15 metres long and two metres wide. Check local safety conditions before visiting. Mountain hikes are also available in Leshten, adding another hiking focus within the municipality to the options offered by the Kaninska eco-trail.

Architectural Heritage in Kovachevitsa

Kovachevitsa is the only architectural reserve in Garmen Municipality. The ensemble includes the Church of St. Nicholas, a monastery school and a secular school, 112 residential buildings and five farm buildings. The church was built in 1847; in 1900, it was given a four-storey bell tower. The reserve thus brings together an extensive architectural ensemble and the clearly dated history of a single building. These two dates offer a concrete starting point for learning about the church and the village.

Forests, Rock Formations and Ancient Plane Trees

Among the natural attractions in the Kovachevitsa area is Kozijat Kamak, a protected natural monument and unique rock formation covering approximately 300 m². The Tamnata Gora nature reserve protects ancient fir, beech and spruce forests in the Dabrash section of the Western Rhodopes, in the area of Kovachevitsa in Garmen Municipality. The Zagrade plane trees in a neighbourhood of Garmen offer a different natural highlight: they are over 600 years old and have been protected since 1968. The rock formation, forest reserve and ancient protected trees each offer a different perspective on the municipality’s natural environment.

When choosing a hotel location, you can organise your trip around these interests: thermal waters in Ognyanovo, architectural heritage and natural attractions in Kovachevitsa, or mountain hikes in Leshten.
