Garmen – Roman History, Ancient Plane Trees and the Kaninska Eco Trail
Accommodation in Garmen
Garmen brings together the history and cultural heritage of a historic town with natural attractions. Within the village, the Roman remains of Nicopolis ad Nestum lie right beside the first houses. St. George’s Church and the ancient plane trees of Zagarde add to the historical landmarks; the nearby Kaninska Eco Trail focuses on hiking and scenery.
Roman Nicopolis ad Nestum
Nicopolis ad Nestum was founded in 106 AD by the Roman Emperor Trajan to celebrate his victory over the Dacians. From the 2nd to the 6th century, the city developed into a center of economic, political and cultural significance. Two historical perspectives thus stand side by side: its founding as a memorial to a military victory and its later role as an important center. The remains are considered one of the few preserved ancient cities in Bulgaria and the only city from the Roman period in the Rhodopes. They lie within the village of Garmen, right beside the first houses.
Church and Natural Heritage in Garmen
St. George’s Church in Garmen was built in 1898 and is a cultural monument of national significance. Together with Nicopolis ad Nestum, it offers a contrast across time: the Roman site dates back to antiquity, while the church was built in the late 19th century.
The plane trees of Zagarde are another part of the natural heritage. They are over 600 years old and have been protected since 1968 because of their age, size and beauty. The trees are 0.5 kilometers west of Garmen, along a paved road; Zagarde is now a neighborhood of the settlement. The landmarks therefore have different locations: the Roman remains are right beside the first houses, while the plane trees are west of the settlement.
Hiking the Kaninska Eco Trail
The nearby Kaninska Eco Trail is 13 kilometers long and passes through wooded and rocky terrain. Scenic views and rich biodiversity characterize the landscape along the route. Hiking options range from two to ten hours, offering anything from shorter outings to considerably longer hikes. Check trail conditions locally before planning your hike.
Near the eco trail, there is a bivouac site with a shelter, tables, benches and fire pits. There are also places for picnics or overnight stays in tents. Check the condition of the facilities locally before making plans to use them.
The Wider Garmen Destination
The wider Garmen destination encompasses parts of the Mesta Valley and the western slopes of the Dabrash section of the Western Rhodopes. Ognyanovo is another highlight within the wider Garmen destination: it is a balneological center. Its thermal water area includes seven natural springs and two boreholes; the mineral water is hyperthermal, at 40 °C.
The long circular route of the Kaninska Eco Trail is also part of this broader regional area. It starts in Kovachevitsa, passes through Skrebatno and Gorno Dryanovo, and returns to Kovachevitsa. This provides a different way to explore the nearby eco trail than its hiking-time options: the focus here is on the route and the places it passes through.
Siniya Vir offers another natural attraction in the wider Garmen destination: the waterfall cascade lies in the valley of the Kanina River and features blue-green pools. From Kovachevitsa, a one-hour walk heading west leads there.
