Kovachevitsa is located in the western Rhodope Mountains. If you are deciding between a stay focused on architectural history and one focused on hiking, the village’s streetscape and the Kaninska Eco Trail are two concrete starting points. The historic buildings, routes and their different time estimates can help you plan your trip.

Architecture and streetscape

The architectural reserve includes St. Nicholas Church, a cell school, a secular school, 112 residential buildings and five agricultural buildings. The village’s streetscape therefore includes historic schools and agricultural buildings as well as houses. The typical Kovachevitsa house type is considered a southern Bulgarian subtype of the Rhodope house and is built over two to four storeys. Typical houses date from the 18th century, have two or three storeys and feature overhanging upper floors.

Six houses in the reserve have features of cultural monuments of national importance: Daskalova, Shungureva, Dishlyanova, Shimerovi, Bangova and Pilareva. Kovachevitsa was declared a historical and architectural reserve in 1977. Visitors can walk along the narrow cobbled lanes and experience the houses as part of the village’s streetscape.

History and visits to the reserve

Kovachevitsa was established after 1656 in connection with population movements linked to attempts to convert the Bulgarian population in the Rhodope Mountains. During the Bulgarian National Revival in the 18th and 19th centuries, the village was an educational centre. This history is also reflected in the buildings that form part of the reserve.

St. Nicholas Church was built in 1847; in 1900, it received a four-storey bell tower. Walks through the cultural and historical reserve, accompanied by a themed talk, are offered year-round. Visitors may also have the opportunity to visit art galleries. As visitor offerings may change, check what is available locally.

Hiking the Kaninska Eco Trail

The Kaninska Eco Trail is 13 kilometres long and passes through wooded and rocky terrain. The available hiking options take between two and ten hours; weather and conditions may affect the route options. The long circular route runs from Kovachevitsa via Skrebatno and Gorno Dryanovo and back to Kovachevitsa. Tourist routes from Kovachevitsa also lead to Siniya Vir Waterfall.

The described sections of the eco trail include the connection from Skrebatno to Kovachevitsa via the first bridge over the Kanina River, and the route from Kovachevitsa to Gorno Dryanovo through the underground passage of Rizzova Dupka. The routes mentioned therefore differ in both their destinations and their course. Check current trail and navigation conditions before hiking; access to the section through Rizzova Dupka may also change.

The eco trail passes through rocky, wooded and river-shaped habitats and is associated with rare plant and animal species. More than 500 metres from Kovachevitsa, on the road to Siniya Vir, there is a bivouac with a shelter, tables, benches and fire pits. There are spots for picnics or tents. Facilities and access may change; check local conditions.

Other natural and cultural areas

Two other places are mentioned as nearby landmarks: Tumnata Gora Nature Reserve is 16 kilometres from Kovachevitsa, at an altitude of 1,400 to 1,600 metres along the upper Kanina River. Kozi Kamak is a rock cult complex 14 kilometres northeast of the village. The location and distance details help distinguish these destinations from the trails and sights in Kovachevitsa.

Regional cuisine can also be part of a stay: in Kovachevitsa, you can try traditional Bulgarian dishes. Selection and availability depend on the establishment and the season.
