You can plan your stay around whether exhibitions, historical points of reference, landscapes or winter sports are your priority.

Culture and Remembrance

The Hittisau Women’s Museum is the first and only women’s museum in Austria. Its exhibitions explore the history and culture of women. Its accompanying programme includes lectures, concerts, symposia, guided tours and school workshops. In this way, the museum combines exhibitions on its core subject with a range of event and educational formats.

DENK.MAL offers a different historical perspective: it is a place of remembrance for people who lost their lives in wars and through systematic killings under National Socialism. As a contemporary place of remembrance, it points to the past and invites reflection and conversation. Its focus is therefore clearly distinct from that of the Women’s Museum: here, remembrance and conversation take centre stage, while the museum focuses on exhibitions about the history and culture of women.

Hittisau Parish Church was consecrated in 1845 to the Three Holy Kings. Alongside the exhibitions and place of remembrance, it offers a specifically dated point of reference in church history.

Hittisau is one of the villages in the region crossed by specially designated “Umgang” trails. These trails draw attention to several villages rather than just one place, giving your stay a regional perspective. The two types of trail also differ in scale: the “Umgang” connects several villages, while the Water Trail highlights individual points of interest along a route in Hittisau.

Trails through the Village and Countryside

The Hittisau Water Trail begins at the village fountain and follows the Bolgenach to the Engenloch Gorge, with its overhanging rock formations. It also leads to the Kommabrücke, a covered wooden bridge around 300 years old, described as the oldest of its kind in the state. The trail brings together different features: the gorge with its rock formations and a covered wooden bridge with a long history.

The Hittisau circular trail also passes right by the Hittisau Alpine Dairy Museum. At Rotenberg, the themed trail has 20 stops; the Rotenberg circular walk starts in Hittisau at the village square. The two descriptions distinguish between the trail formats: the starting point is specified for the circular walk, while the number of stops is given for the themed trail.

Cross-Country Skiing and Regional Specialities

Cross-country skiing is another seasonal option for planning a winter trip. The Grenzlandloipe trail runs between Hittisau and Balderschwang for more than 70 kilometres. Hittisau also has a sunny village loop for cross-country skiing. These offer two distinct options: a trail between two named places and a village loop.

The dairy shop at Sennerei Hittisau offers mountain cheese from its own maturing cellar as well as numerous other regional specialities. The range may change.
