Vorarlberg: Culture between Lake Constance and the Alps
Accommodation in Vorarlberg
Vorarlberg stretches from Lake Constance to mountains reaching heights of up to 3,000 metres. Its diversity includes high alpine areas, wooded valleys, species-rich meadows, moors and river landscapes. The region also offers a wide range of cultural attractions: historic architectural landmarks, more than 80 museums, theatres, public art and modern architecture shape its regional cultural landscape.
Experience nature and get out and about
Vorarlberg is home to 39 Natura 2000 sites. Verwall is the region’s largest European nature conservation area in the Natura 2000 network. One distinctive place to explore this landscape is the Wiegensee European nature conservation area: the high moor lies northeast of Partenen, at an altitude of 1,920 metres at the foot of the Versalspitze. From the Tafamuntbahn mountain station, moderately challenging day hikes with scenic views pass by Wiegensee. Specially trained nature guides also offer tours through Vorarlberg’s protected natural areas, sharing knowledge about biodiversity and rare animals and plants. In summer, Montafon Tourism offers guided day hikes.
There are various formats to choose from when planning a tour. Min Weag circles Vorarlberg in 31 stages. The Vorarlberg cultural cycling tour, by contrast, is a cycling trip of around 252 kilometres across the region. At BrĂĽggelekopf, the Music Hiking Trail combines exercise and music: hikers can enjoy songs and musical pieces at ten stops. Themed hiking trails in all Vorarlberg regions also explore history, local culture, traditions and natural features.
Architecture, crafts and museums
The Kunsthaus Bregenz was designed by Peter Zumthor, built between 1994 and 1997, and opened in 1997. Each year, it presents exhibitions by four different contemporary artists; the specific programme changes. The architecture tours through Vorarlberg offer a broader look at architecture: the Vorarlberg Architecture Institute and Vorarlberg Tourism have put together seven themed day tours in total. Regional craftsmanship is at the heart of the Werkraum Haus. As an exhibition and meeting place, it brings together regional and global perspectives.
In Dornbirn, inatura brings nature, people and technology to life in an interactive exhibition. It is housed in a modernised industrial building and includes interactive games and videos, as well as live and preserved animals that visitors can touch. More than 40 interactive stations explore technological and physical phenomena. Those interested in architecture and history will find other distinctive examples: the medieval Schattenburg above Feldkirch is considered one of Vorarlberg’s best-preserved castles. The Martinsturm in Bregenz is described as Central Europe’s largest onion-domed tower. On the fourth floor of the vorarlberg museum, a panorama room offers views of Lake Constance. Skyspace Lech was created by US artist James Turrell.
You can also learn more about the Bregenz Festival on a guided tour: visitors can explore the lakeside stage, get a behind-the-scenes look at the performances, and find out more about the festival’s history and development. Check dates and booking options in advance. This lets you plan your trip around the cultural venues, nature experiences and tours that interest you most.
