If you are planning a stay in Nenzing, two distinct interests take center stage: hiking in the Alpine landscape and learning about local history. Alpe Gamp and Nenzinger Himmel offer specific options for a hiking-focused trip; the Nenzing Cultural Trail passes through several periods of the area’s history.

Hiking on Alpe Gamp

Alpe Gamp lies at an altitude of 1,564 meters. There are walks and longer hikes to various natural attractions. The alp borders the Principality of Liechtenstein; hikers can enjoy panoramic views stretching from Lake Constance to the Arlberg. This brings together a specific altitude, a border location, and far-reaching views. In summer, specialties made from old traditional recipes are produced at the Alpe Gamp alpine dairy.

Planning access to Nenzinger Himmel

Nenzinger Himmel offers a different focus for hiking. From Nenzing, it can be reached on foot in four hours or by hiking bus. Cars and bicycles are prohibited. The minibus ride into the Gamperdonatal must be booked at least one day in advance. The walking and bus options therefore differ not only in how you get there, but also in the planning required: anyone wishing to use the minibus needs to arrange it in advance. Transfer arrangements may change seasonally, so check the current details about transport and booking before making your plans.

Cultural trail and historical traces

The Nenzing Cultural Trail traces local history from the Bronze and Iron Ages through Roman times and early Christianity in the 6th century, to the age of knights, Gothic and Baroque periods, and the more recent and most recent history of Nenzing. It thus covers an extended historical sequence rather than just one period. A lower church, identified as the oldest church in Vorarlberg, was found beneath Nenzing’s present-day parish church. The cultural trail also passes the Scheibenstuhl. Excavations conducted between 2005 and 2008 identified it as a prehistoric sacrificial site where offerings were burned. The route thus places ecclesiastical history and archaeological traces in a broader historical context.

Roman history and local recreation

In the 4th century AD, the Romans built a fort at Stellfeder. It served as a watchtower and observation point, as well as a refuge for the Romance-speaking population. The Roman structure thus brings to life a period also featured on the cultural trail. Another aspect of the area’s character is the Meng Gorge: the Meng was restored to a natural state below the structure there, and a park was created for the local population to use as a recreational area. Alongside the Alpine hiking destinations, the Meng restoration and the park are also part of Nenzing’s landscape and local character.
