Discover Waldzell
Accommodation in Waldzell
Waldzell is home to the foothills of the Kobernaußerwald and Hausruckwald forests. Marked hiking trails, two named routes, the Grafenstein and the Zechentreffen at the Waldzell Winter Fair give you different starting points for planning your trip. Whether you would rather spend your time cycling, hiking or attending a cultural event, you can decide based on these themes.
Hiking trails and routes through Waldzell
Waldzell has marked hiking trails of varying lengths. Their markings help you find your way and return safely to your starting point. This lets you choose hiking trails based on your preferred distance, without assuming a particular route or walking time.
The family-friendly Roman Cycle Route runs from Passau to the Salzkammergut and passes through Waldzell. The Upper Austrian-Bavarian Marien hiking trail, which runs through the municipal area, offers a different perspective on the region. The names and types of trails make the two routes easy to distinguish: a cycling route and a hiking trail. If you plan your trip around one of these routes, also keep in mind whether your plans relate to the town of Waldzell or the municipal area.
Another option is a llama hike in the Kobernaußerwald. The trail leads through the gentle rolling hills of the Innviertel on the edge of the Kobernaußerwald. The route is adapted to the abilities and needs of the participants. Advance booking is required for this hike.
The Grafenstein: border history and walking route
The Grafenstein is the southernmost and most important of the 25 Austrian-Bavarian border stones that have survived to this day on the municipal boundary between Waldzell and Redleiten, Frankenburg, Fornach and Pöndorf. Its border location is therefore an essential part of this destination: the stone stands on a municipal boundary and is part of a series of surviving border stones. The Grafenstein is only accessible to tourists on foot. The access roads are forest roads and are not open to general traffic. Plan your visit as a walk. As trail signage may change, check the current signs on site.
Folk dancing and leisure
Since 2000, the Waldzell Folk Dance Group has organized the Zechentreffen at the Waldzell Winter Fair. Various Zechen groups and folk dance groups perform the Innviertel Landler there. If you choose the Zechentreffen as the occasion for your trip, check the Winter Fair dates in advance.
The Waldzell outdoor pool offers another leisure activity: it is a modern adventure pool with a giant slide. Together with the hiking and cycling trails and the border stone, it offers a choice of activities to consider when planning your stay.
Waldzell as a destination for your hotel search
When searching for hotels in Waldzell, you can first decide what you want your stay to focus on: a ride on the Roman Cycle Route, a hike, the walk to the Grafenstein or a visit to the Zechentreffen. The destinations differ both in terms of activity and the conditions mentioned. This is particularly important for the Grafenstein, which is only accessible to tourists on foot, and for the llama hike, which requires advance booking.
