Senftenbach: Churches, Chapel and Countryside
Accommodation in Senftenbach
Senftenbach combines church architecture with a rural, gently rolling setting. Two distinct focal points can help you plan your trip: the parish church, Calvary chapel and Stations of the Cross on the one hand, and hiking and cycling on the other. The historic buildings reflect different eras; outdoors, the landscape and the Langzaun loop provide their own points of interest.
Church history and sacred buildings
An imperial decree issued by Emperor Joseph II in 1784 made Senftenbach an independent parish. The parish church in Senftenbach had already been built from tufa in the Gothic style in the 15th century. These two details provide context for different aspects: 1784 marks the parish's independence, while the 15th century marks the construction of the church building. This makes it possible to distinguish the history of the parish from the history of the building.
The Calvary chapel is located in the district of St. Ulrich. In 1862, Maximilian Count von und zu Arco Valley built it as a cemetery and Calvary chapel at the end of the Stations of the Cross. It is a Neo-Gothic brick chapel. The Stations of the Cross are also in St. Ulrich. The chapel and stations are therefore linked by their shared sacred context in the district.
Compared with the parish church, the buildings differ in period and material: the church features the Gothic style and tufa, while the chapel features Neo-Gothic architecture and brick. Neo-Gothic refers to the later revival of Gothic design.
As of 23 June 2026, the Calvary chapel and the Stations of the Cross are protected as historic monuments under an individual order. This protection applies to both features in St. Ulrich.
Countryside, hiking and cycling
Senftenbach lies in gently rolling countryside. The rural surroundings offer many opportunities for hiking and cycling. The Senftenbach stream is another distinctive feature of the landscape: it rises in Eitzing and winds its way through the municipality. The hills and the stream provide different points of reference for understanding the surroundings, while hiking and cycling are two ways to experience them actively.
One specific hiking option is the Langzaun loop of the Innviertel Movement Arena. It starts in the center of Senftenbach and follows a circular route through the gently rolling landscape of the Innviertel. The starting point locates the trail in the village, while its route takes in the Innviertel landscape. As a loop, it differs from a route with separate starting and finishing points.
The difference in terms of specificity can help you choose what interests you: the Langzaun loop is a named circular hike that starts in the village center, while hiking and cycling are general opportunities in the rural surroundings. If you would like to consider a specific hike, the loop offers a clear point of reference. If you prefer to keep your choice of activity open, you can explore the landscape on foot or by bicycle.
