Discover Freistadt: Old Town, Castle Museum and Beer Culture
Accommodation in Freistadt
Freistadt combines largely preserved Gothic fortifications with a diverse Castle Museum, natural landscapes and a history of beer. This gives you several distinct areas of interest to consider when planning your trip: architecture and history, collections, routes through nature and the city, or beer-related experiences.
Castle Museum: City History Across Nine Floors
The Mühlviertler Schlossmuseum Freistadt displays around 21,000 exhibits spanning eight centuries of folk culture, crafts and city history. Its themes are presented across nine floors. The former castle chapel houses Austria’s largest collection of reverse-glass paintings, with more than 500 exhibits. The museum’s home, Freistadt Castle, also has a long history: it was built in the 14th century.
The outdoor walkway on the ninth floor offers a special perspective. It is about 35 metres above the ground and provides views of the city and the surrounding Mühlviertel hills. Guided tours for groups of eight or more are available at any time by prior arrangement; plan to book before your trip.
Old Town, Minster and City Fortifications
The largely heritage-protected Old Town is enclosed by city walls and gates. Freistadt’s fortifications date from the Gothic period and are almost completely preserved. Those interested in religious architecture will find something special at St Catherine’s Minster: it is Austria’s only five-aisled basilica.
On a walk around the city, visitors can see the towers and gates of the fortifications. The Freistadt Tower Tour focuses on seven towers and two gates and includes a tower climb. As this is described as a visitor activity, it is advisable to check availability before your trip.
The Scheibling Tower can also be understood in this historical context: it is one of two round towers built in the 15th century to supplement the city fortifications. The tower can be visited as part of a tower tour by appointment. Arrange the appointment in advance.
Trails and Landscapes in Freistadt
Urban nature can be found in the revitalised city moat, with its winding paths and various themed gardens. The Thurytal valley, in the Feldaist valley, is a restored natural gem in Freistadt that has retained its natural character. These places offer a different focus from the walled Old Town, with gardens and landscapes taking centre stage.
The municipality of Freistadt has 100 kilometres of hiking trails. The hiking options also include the Nordwaldkammweg, described as Austria’s oldest long-distance hiking trail. Another named route is the 25.1-kilometre Medieval Adventure Trail in Freistadt. If you are planning a hike, check the conditions for each route separately.
Beer History and Bierstacheln
The BIER.KULT! TOUR traces Freistadt’s beer history and follows in the footsteps of its breweries and inns. Bierstacheln involves a specific process: an iron rod, the Bierstachel, is heated to about 600°C and dipped into beer chilled to 6–7°C for two to three seconds. This caramelises the sugar and makes the foam rise. Check the booking details in advance.
The Alte Schmiede can be visited as part of a Bierstacheln tour by appointment. The two beer experiences therefore have different focuses: the tour traces the history and legacy of the breweries and inns, while Bierstacheln centres on a specific process.
