Pierbach – Hiking, Culture and Leisure
Accommodation in Pierbach
Pierbach combines marked hiking trails with cultural history and a leisure park that is open year-round and free to access. When planning your trip, you can easily distinguish between the different highlights: the Johannesweg and other trails follow varied themes, while the parish church, Ruttenstein Castle Ruins and Häferl Museum each offer their own cultural focus. The leisure park adds facilities for sport and exercise to the mix.
Hiking on Marked Trails
There are four marked hiking trails in Pierbach. Pierbach is the recommended starting point for pilgrims on the Johannesweg. The trail is signposted throughout and marked in a clockwise direction. One of its stops is the Johannesbrunnen fountain with the Angels’ Chapel. Located at the Irxenmayr family’s farm, it is the first stop and a place of spiritual energy on the Johannesweg.
The other trails also each have a different focus. The ZweiFlĂĽsseWeg runs for about three kilometres along the Kleine Naarn river. The M2 Pierbach Tour leads from Pierbach through the MĂĽhlviertel Nature Park. The Ruttensteinweg heads towards Ruttenstein Castle Ruins. These trails offer distinct points of interest for planning a hike: a river, a nature park and historic castle ruins. The Johannesweg stands out for its pilgrimage connection and clear trail markings.
Ruttenstein Castle Ruins lie at an elevation of 758 metres on a wooded mountain cone between the valleys of the Große and Kleine Naarn rivers. Landscape and history meet here: Ruttenstein Castle was mentioned as early as 1160 as “castrum Rotenstein” in connection with Bambergian property. The name recorded in historical sources and the context of its ownership give the ruins a specific historical connection, while their location between the two valleys defines their setting.
Church, Castle Ruins and Häferl Museum
The Pierbach parish church is a three-aisled hall church featuring Romanesque and Gothic elements. Its chancel is Gothic, while the side aisles are Late Gothic. The church also contains wall paintings from the 16th century. The parish church is on the MĂĽhlviertel Gothic Route, linking its architecture with a regional cultural route.
The Häferl Museum Pierbach explores a different subject. It displays rare mugs, as well as coffee and tea sets. Highlights include pieces from porcelain manufacturers such as Meissen, Wiener Keramik and Gmundnerkeramik. The museum also covers both how a mug is made and its history. Its subject therefore ranges from the objects on display to their manufacture and historical development.
These places offer distinct cultural highlights: the parish church combines different architectural styles with wall paintings, Ruttenstein Castle Ruins represent a historical landmark in a striking landscape, and the Häferl Museum focuses on vessels, sets and their history of manufacture. Together, they offer different points of interest for a stay focused on architecture, history or everyday culture.
Sport and Exercise at the Leisure Park
The Pierbach leisure park is open year-round and free to access. Its facilities include a pump track, a skate park, and a climbing and balancing course. The multi-purpose court has space for football, basketball and volleyball. The facilities cater to several forms of exercise and sport, so there is more to do than just one activity. For trip planning, the leisure park offers a different focus from the hiking trails or cultural sites: its listed sports and exercise facilities take centre stage.
